We have a thread going on FB around this topic. It's a recurring theme with these miners, and many not opting to repair as often times the cost to repair compared to the purchase price is hard to swallow. Even made a joke "Dead VRM Club" mug to commemorate when it happens to you.
I've personally had consistently good results renting hash from Braiins on HeliosPool. Even came within less than 1G from winning a BCH block. I know many of HeliosPool users use them as well, so HeliosPool has partnered with them.
