In Igbo folklore, there is a demigod named Ojadili, a flute player and god of war who went about conquering mortals and spirits alike. He brought kingdoms to their knees and, it is said, even erased gods from existence, until he was ultimately destroyed by his own pride.
Much has been said and written about the major deities in Igbo cosmology: Amadioha, Enu, Ani, Anyanwụ, Ogwugwu, Idemili, and many others. Yet, there seems to be little or nothing written about this half-god, half-mortal. The circumstances surrounding his birth remain largely unexplored. Which god fathered him through which mortal? What shaped his rage? What were the stories behind his conquests, and what was the power of his flute?
I was drawn to these questions, to the gaps in his story, and to the possibilities they held.
I also chose to set this story in the ancient kingdom of Nri, a place that has always fascinated me. Nri's history, its reputation as the cradle of Igbo spiritual authority, its precolonial civilisation, its priest-kings, and its historical relationship with the Igala all offered a rich setting for the story I wanted to tell.
Then came the idea of bringing two myths together: the story of Ojadili and that of Ezeagu, the man said to transform into a leopard by night. I began to wonder what the life of such a man might look like in the ancient kingdom of Nri, and what could happen when these two mythologies collided.
To be clear, neither of these myths originated in Nri. I have simply chosen to set my story within its ancient world, drawing on its history and spiritual traditions to create a fictional narrative.
And while you wait for this book, the first in the series is coming on October 16th, published by @masobebooks The Path of Blood and River tells the story of another deity in Igbo cosmology: Idemili, the goddess of the Idemili people of Anambra State, the great mother python of the rivers.
You may want to grab that one first. 😉

First of all, this title??? PERFECT. 😭
I remember when this book came out and people on Twitter were having a small civil war over the title.
It tells you exactly enough and absolutely nothing at the same time.😅
