This is how utilities work - both in private and public sector. If the dividend was granted back to the utility as you suggest, property taxes would go up an equivalent amount.

This was a solid amendment. Water utility rates are self funded and separate from property tax revenues. And have been such for ages across Canada and North America. Attempts to change this structure by certain council members demonstrates the need for an independent MCC...

@chabot4ward10 prepared an amendment that the water utility rates be revisited in 2027 in addition to the normal midterm review in 2028. This passed. His rationale was to allow for future funding from other levels of government. And bonus - it allows new Water Board to review.

I had to Vote No to the Huge Utility Bill increase because I agree with the Chamber of Commerce that it would SEVERELY impact Calgary Residents and Businesses. I believe we could’ve looked at alternatives like: -Pause the hike until we see if we get some infrastructure support from the Province or Federal government in upcoming budgets. -Stretch out the spending and cost recovery over a longer period of time. -Reduce or Pause some of the Huge projected infrastructure dollars for the Prairie Economic Gateway project -Take the Cities utility dividend and put it into water pipes instead of General Revenue -Sell some Cities assets which are Enormous Sadly the utility hikes passed Council today by a vote of 9 to 6 so now more than ever Council must look at ways to reduce the proposed double digit Property Tax Increase.

Which is why we need a technically qualified Water Utility Oversight Board to advise council, and why IMO Thompson's days should be numbered. The two Bearspaw failures cost taxpayers ~$125 million + and all that happened to Thompson was that he got a promotion from @duckworth17

I watched that and what it confirmed to me was that Thompson wasn't qualified to answer the Q (the widespread false assumption was that the failed pipes last 100 years - widely known as untrue in industry and you were unqualified to discern when you were getting played or mislead

You then followed up with questions of Thompson where he confirmed you met with him in private over your concerns over the health of the water system, and got him to acknowledge everything was fine, no concerns. This was supposed to be a rebuke to the Mayor, I assume.

@JenniferWyness in today's Committee meeting, after mayor @JeromyYYC asked about accountability of Acting COO Michael Thompson, PEng, Thompson provided a masterful but still a lengthy dodge of the question-claiming that this whole past year has been one of accountability.Bahaha

N.B. There was one Committee meeting where, in response to questions from other Councillors, at least 2 maybe 3 times he responded to them as "Councillor Keating" before correcting himself. It became a bit of a joke.

Does she have some sort of special connection with the Acting COO of Water that is at risk of being severely altered? Reminiscent of when as former GM of Transportation he charmed the Council head of the Green Line (before a GL Board was formed) Shane Keating. Not good.

I can't speak for the rest of the 1.6 million Calgarians, but Councillor @JenniferWyness plans to scrap the recently announced Water Utility Board does not instill confidence. What in her @cityofcalgary profile indicates any special knowledge in water resource management? Cuckoo

And is someone asking CAO candidates how they would go about this in the recently completed long list interviews, as they would lead whatever implementation was required?
