Sometimes, a single meeting can change the lives of millions. On 29 October 1863, in Geneva, Switzerland, 16 states and philanthropic societies gathered to shape the future of humanitarian action. Their discussions laid the foundations for national relief societies, the Red Cross emblem and the protection of the wounded and those caring for them. Over 163 years later, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the largest humanitarian network in the world.

In armed conflicts, teachers help students continue learning, maintain a sense of normality and keep communities connected. On #WorldTeachersDay, we recognize teachers who continue to teach in some of the most difficult circumstances and the vital role they play in protecting the right to education. Also, they play a key role in supporting the ICRC’s mission to disseminate the rules of war worldwide, helping educate lawyers and other professionals to promote respect for international humanitarian law. More than 130 armed conflicts are taking place worldwide, with devastating consequences for millions of people. But it is not too late to reverse course. Changing how wars are fought requires political will. That is why Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan and South Africa, together with the ICRC, launched the Global IHL Initiative - to make respect for international humanitarian law a political priority and limit suffering in armed conflict. At the UN General Assembly, representatives from the six founding States joined the ICRC President in calling for renewed respect for the rules of war.
