So @binance got hit with the biggest hack in crypto history. Everything we actually know so far 👇
💸 How much
Binance puts the total impact at ~$6.3B. @chainalysis says ~$5.9B at the time of theft, nearly 4x Bybit's $1.5B record from last year.
🧊 How much is frozen
~$3B and counting. @tether froze 1.567B USDT and @circle 800M+ USDC, with Ripple and Coinbase blocking funds too. Nearly half of it, frozen within hours.
💻 How it happened
CEO @_RichardTeng says it likely started with a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. That got the attacker into a service container, where they pushed through unauthorised withdrawals. Not a one-click job, and no sign of leaked private keys.
🇰🇵 Who
Chainalysis has "a high degree of confidence" it's North Korea. @zachxbt traced stolen funds through THORChain to the same address as last month's $388M Bitget hack.
📉 The dump
The hacker sold $UNI, $ENA, $PEPE, $LINK, $AAVE, $ONDO and $WLD for ~70.5K ETH ($158M) within hours.
🤨 The awkward bit
@arbitrum's Security Council moved $30.5M out of the hacker's address on its own call. Right outcome. It also means an L2 council can move funds out of an address when it decides to.
🛡️ Your money
Binance says it's covering every loss from SAFU and company funds. Deposits work. Withdrawals are paused for a security rebuild, back within 48 hours per Binance.
⚠️ Scam season
Fake "refund" links and "Binance support" DMs will be everywhere this week. Official channels only. Nobody legit will ever ask for your seed phrase.
