Replying to @UNESCO
@UNESCO’s new study Re|Shaping Policies for Creativity is not another love letter to culture. It is a brisk demand for budgets, rights, metrics, mobility, and fewer grand speeches standing in for actual policy.
The cultural sector has never lacked flattering language. Culture is vital, transformative, inclusive, resilient, regenerative, future-facing, community-building, soul-nourishing. It has been praised from lecterns, embroidered into strategy documents, and wheeled out whenever a city wants to sound civilised.
What it has not always received is infrastructure.
That is what makes #UNESCO’s newly published 2026 edition of Re|Shaping Policies for Creativity worth reading.

THE SHOW MUST SURVIVE II: THE FILM FOUNDATION – SAVING CINEMA FROM ITS FINAL CURTAIN
In 1990, Martin Scorsese joined fellow filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, and Robert Redford to establish The Film Foundation. Their alarm was justified:
the movies that had helped define the twentieth century were themselves disappearing. Nitrate stock could burn, acetate could decay, colour could fade, and original sound elements could vanish. Stardom, it transpired, offered no immunity from deterioration.

THE SHOW MUST SURVIVE!
A Love Letter to Sag Harbor Cinema and the Glorious Business of Saving the Movies
Some theatres have ghosts. Sag Harbor Cinema has an entire second act. And rather wonderfully, it now spends a long weekend each autumn rescuing other people's ghosts.
I lived briefly in Southampton in the early 1990s and happened to be on the East End the morning Sag Harbor Cinema burned in December 2016.
What a splendid plot twist that this beloved cinema, rescued from destruction, now celebrates the rescue of cinema itself!
This weekend, I'll be attending the Martin Scorsese Presents: Sag Harbor Cinema Festival of Preservation, a glorious gathering of restored masterpieces, forgotten pioneers, film historians, and the extraordinary people who keep our cinematic heritage alive.
As an artist, playwright & film enthusiasm, I can't imagine a more compelling celebration.
After all, the past has already given its performance.
The least we can do is make certain there is an encore.

On 22 April 2026, in a ceremony draped in the grammar of legality, Iranian officials formally handed over the title deed of Golestan Palace and symbolically delivered four more deeds for Hegmataneh, Pasargadae, Persepolis, and Chehel Sotoun to the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts.
A state stands accused by international human rights bodies and rights organizations of arbitrary killings, mass arrests, torture, and possible crimes against humanity, while simultaneously presenting itself as the proper legal guardian of Persepolis.
The choreography is almost too neat: blood on the street, velvet on the lectern, a heritage deed held up like a clean white glove.
