With all the talk about migrating to mastodon, I'm starting to picture myself as a tribal elder who realizes he has already made his last migration as he watches everyone pack up their furs and babies and earthenware pots and start traveling south ahead of the advancing glacier.

I have to confess that I had never *really* understood how a government with a huge majority in Parliament could simply implode while in power, to the extent that it became simply incapable of remaining in office. The period from 1903 to 1905 is making a lot more sense now.
In 1900, the Tories won a landslide majority. By 1905, they were so divided they resigned without waiting for an election. In between, they embraced an ideological trade policy designed to restore British greatness & fund better services. Today's teaching has a familiar ring...

Did you know it takes 1kg of wild fish, anchovies, mackerel, sardines etc to produce 1kg of farmed salmon? Yes, they catch wild fish and feed it to farmed salmon.

There is the broadest imaginable social consensus for a windfall tax on energy companies, that Shell need to be part of it, so as not to become associated/toxicity by the Truss administration's opposition to it.

Very few people focus on the fact that the standing charge for gas and electricity is independent of the size of the property being supplied. A pensioner in the world's smallest one-bed cottage pays the same daily standing charge as a millionnaire in his 28-bedroom mansion.

V big day for the economy and country. We’re about to see quite possibly the single biggest fiscal intervention by any peacetime government in history. This is something that’ll affect all of us - even more than furlough. And it’ll be even more expensive. Quick primer 🧵

The energy price cap will rise AGAIN this week. We are heading for a national emergency Labour has called for an urgent freeze to energy bills But neither the Prime Minister nor the candidates to replace him have anything of substance to say The lack of leadership is shameful
