Later, many works seem to portray or hint at #Chopin and #JennyLind’s relationship. In addition to the images below: George Sand’s 1842-1843 “Consuelo”; Chopin’s and Jenny Lind’s 1848-1849 letters; Jane Welsh Carlyle’s 1850 reference to “Chopin’s widow”; Kwiatkowski’s 1859 “Polonez”; Paderewski’s 1937 film; and Chagall’s 1957 “Le Concert”. #ChopinArt youtu.be/ZM3sWUAexaM #Paderewski #GeorgeSand #PaulineViardot #Chagall #Symbolism
At #Chopin’s funeral at La Madeleine, #JennyLind and #PaulineViardot sang to the 4-voice Tuba Mirum of Mozart’s Requiem. They stood behind a black curtain to hide Jenny Lind’s presence. A blond woman resembling her is seen behind the soprano in this 4-min. historical and emotional enactment conducted by Leonard Bernstein: youtu.be/q-eVYl-r96U Alexis de #Tocqueville, foreign minister of France, appears to have attended the funeral authorised by Louis Napoleon. They were both friends of Jenny Lind (daughter of the king of Sweden & Norway alias #Napoleon I’s Marshal Jean Bernadotte). #ChopinArt

An interesting #Chopin connection: Prince Janusz Radziwiłł was the great-grandson of Prince Antoni Henryk Radziwiłł. The young Fryderyk Chopin stayed at the prince’s residence at Antonin in October 1829, where he composed the Polonaise in C major for piano and cello, Op. 3: youtu.be/JNGuhVTWE7g #cello

#Chopin’s funeral ceremony took place on 30 October 1849 at La Madeleine in the presence of some 3,000 people — many from abroad and, as journalists noted with surprise, some festively dressed after having originally expected to attend his wedding to #JennyLind. And the music? — #Chopin’s Barcarolle, Op. 60 would fit Chagall’s “Le Concert”: youtu.be/zJXE7gBw1c4p #Chagall His Polonaise, Op. 53 would fit Kwiatkowski’s “Polonez, Chopin’s dream”: youtu.be/qbF4a3Us1pQ #ChopinArt
Do you share our observation that the imagery of #Chagall’s 1957 lithograph “Le Concert” — with two lovers in a boat, groups of spectators, many musicians performing for them, a flying angel, and a solitary figure resembling #GeorgeSand playing a lyre — recalls Teofil Kwiatkowski’s 1859 “Polonez, Rêve de Frederick Chopin pianiste”? #Chopin #JennyLind #ChopinArt #otd

The woman portrayed at Chopin’s deathbed by the distinguished Félix Barrias in 1885 resembles #JennyLind, who had known #Chopin since 1841. — Does the scene carry the symbolism of a spiritual union? Abbé Jełowicki was present on 16 Oct. 1849 (he had arrived from Rome) and, according to F. Niecks, sacred music was sung. Jane Welsh Carlyle later wrote that another woman brought “Chopin’s widow” to mind. #ChopinArt

Ludwika’s journey from Warsaw to Paris — and her return — required permission from both Russian and French authorities. Jenny Lind knew President Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte and his Foreign Minister, Alexis de Tocqueville. #Chopin #JennyLind #Tocqueville

In early October, #Chopin’s health continued to deteriorate. He had stopped his medication months earlier (ref. previous posts); preparations for his wedding with #JennyLind and his move to Place Vendôme added stress, while a sudden cold spell in late September may have weakened him further. His sister Ludwika, in Warsaw, received permission to visit him.

Chopin composed the majestic Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53 in 1842 (Jenny Lind returned to Sweden in July) — Arthur Rubinstein once called it “the composition which is the closest to my heart”. Further research might clarify whether this polonaise is connected to Kwiatkowski’s wedding scenario, “Polonez, Rêve de F. Chopin” (1859). #Chopin #JennyLind #ChopinArt Rubinstein: youtu.be/qbF4a3Us1pQ

Following the summer of 1841 with #JennyLind, the late 1841–late 1842 period was exceptionally productive for #Chopin — some 10 major works, including the Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52: youtu.be/zgbV9RADQLU #GeorgeSand #Nohant
It started with #JennyLind, the Swedish Nightingale, being coached by #Chopin in singing and piano at Nohant in the summer of 1841 — alongside her new friend #PaulineViardot (“sing with your fingers”). #GeorgeSand #Nohant @el_pais
