Obama on Pete Hegseth: You've got the defense secretary who's squarely focused on the jawlines and testosterone levels of our troops. How much time do you think this Defense Secretary spends looking at himself in the mirror in the morning?

Even if we stop all emissions tomorrow We are still locked into a climate hell as past emissions will continue to heat the planet for decades Yet world continues to burn fossil fuels locking us into catastrophic climate change
Past emissions will continue warming the planet for decades Carbon majors have emitted more than a trillion tons of carbon dioxide, a substantial portion of which will remain in the air, trapping heat, for millennia. futurity.org/past-emissions-…

Last week two different chatbot companies were in the news. First, Character. ai filed for bankruptcy, in an effort to avoid accountability.  New reporting suggests Disney asked the company to file for bankruptcy as part of their deal to acquire the technology. They didn’t want to buy the company outright because of the legal liability. Kids were harmed. That debt does not disappear in bankruptcy court. Then eight state AGs filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI this week. First coordinated state action against an AI company. The allegations: deceiving parents about safety, designing products that create emotional dependency in children, and failing to protect young users from self-harm content. Nebraska’s suit is the one to watch. It’s the first enforcement action brought under a state design code law. That’s a milestone worth marking. While CharacterAI seeks to use the bankruptcy process as a get out of jail free card, OpenAI’s defense? Parental controls. We’ve heard that before. You cannot parental-control your way out of dangerous design. The burden of proof belongs on these companies. These stories show the AI chatbot industry is running the same playbook social media ran. Race to scale. Worry about safety later. We know how that story ends. theguardian.com/technology/2…

In case you were wondering if Larry Ellison would use his partial ownership of TIKTok to shut down the exposure of his billionaire buddies and their weirdness, corruption and grifting … wonder no more. TikTok just shut down the media page of the world renowned, Oscar winning director Alex Gibney’s documentary film “MUSK”. The comprehensive documentary on all things Elon. It’s more f&@&’d then you can imagine. The best thing any of us can do now is to go see it! It will blow your mind. Billionaire broke mind virus. Hear it from the people who have known Elon over the years. #BrokeMindVirus

Until we solve the alignment problem at its source, AI models will continue to optimize for the wrong goals, and increasingly impactful real-world consequences may occur, beyond the ones described here. This is a critical issue I discussed in my blogpost last month, which is cited in the article: fortune.com/2026/10/16/opena…

Penguin has moved up the publication date of my new book with Patchen Barss called "Smarter Than Us". The book explains how AI works for a non-technical reader and then talks about the myriad risks and what to do about them.

🚨 BREAKING Y-AXIS 🌊🌡📈 Record warm waters in the main El Niño region reached >30°C for the first time in the @noaa Sea Surface Temperature dataset. We've ain't seen nothing yet of the impacts this will have around the world.
The El Nino is off the charts. Can people see the real issue and accept the implications? We may be getting closer. See the Bigger Problem – mailchi.mp/caa/super-duper-e… Also available on Substack: jimehansen.substack.com/p/su…

Siddharth Kara just said it on Rogan: Britain paid the slave owners a fortune. Taxpayers finished the Bill in 2015. £20 million. Forty percent of the entire national budget. Then they borrowed the money. British taxpayers were still paying that loan in 2015. Not 1850. 2015. People who never owned a slave, never saw a plantation, were still on the hook for compensating men who treated human beings as property. The Gladstones cashed one of the biggest checks. Tens of millions in today’s money. On top of the fortune they already extracted. The enslaved got five more years of unpaid “apprenticeship.” Then Britain just replaced them with Indian indentured labor and kept the machine running. That’s the part that doesn’t make the museum plaque.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
