UK petrol was 174.57p a litre in the week of 19 Oct. A year ago it was 134.69p. Duty and VAT are 47% of that price. I put every UK pump price since 2018 and the Ofgem price cap for all 14 regions in one PDF and CSV, from official DESNZ and Ofgem data. Almost half of everything South Korea sold abroad in October was chips. $56.4bn out of $115.3bn. Chip exports were up 259% on a year ago, driven by big tech spending on AI. Then last week's US vote stirred talk of tighter rules on data centres. Over three trading days the KOSPI fell 10.4%. SK hynix fell 19%. Samsung fell 14%. That's a share price hit, not lost orders. No new US rules have been announced, and long term chip deals could soften any blow. But it shows who carries the AI build risk. The Bank of Korea reckons chips give about half of Korea's growth this year. It updates its forecast later this month. That's the number to watch.

$9.6bn in 3 months on one stock. Its own. Berkshire Hathaway bought back that much of itself. It only buys when its CEO thinks the shares are worth more than the price. It still sits on $352.3bn in cash and US T bills. Business profit fell to $12.7bn from $13.5bn.

4%. The Bank of England just raised Bank Rate for the first time since 2023. It was 3.75%. The vote was 8 to 1. The reason is your energy bill and your fuel tank. The Bank now expects inflation to hit about 5% by mid 2027. Tracker mortgages usually move first. Savers may finally get a bump.

52.8. That is the UK factory PMI for October. Anything over 50 means growth. It is the best reading in five months. Output grew at its fastest pace in 25 months. New orders picked up, at home and abroad. Export orders rose for a tenth month in a row. But there is a catch. Costs are rising faster. Firms named staff, transport and raw materials. Delivery times got longer too. And jobs did not grow. Staff numbers stayed flat after six months of hiring. The survey closed on 27 October, the day before the Budget. So next month shows how firms took it. Busy factories. Tight margins. That is the picture right now.
