Covid infections in England are continuing to increase. The overall Covid risk level remains High and, as of 18 October, 1 in every 149 people in England were infected. Full precautions, including a PPE mask, are strongly recommended in ALL indoor places. A thread 🧵

There's so much wrong with infection prevention and control policy in the UK that it's hard to know where to start. But it's important to keep challenging and chipping away 🙏
Our open letter to UK infection control leads went today. Patients can be asked to remove their FFP2 or FFP3 mask, or swap it for a surgical one, while staff can now choose a respirator if treating a patient with respiratory symptoms. clinicallyvulnerable.org/let… #RightToMask

I can believe it. I don't want to, but I can. There has been so much learning about preventing and controlling airborne aerosol-transmiited infections that NHS leaders have shown extraordinary, unwavering dedication to completely ignoring. It's negligence on an epic scale.
I cannot believe this. The 2024 NHS pandemic plan states the following generic assumptions: “it will not be possible to halt the spread of a new pandemic virus, and it would be a waste of public health resources and capacity to attempt to do so.” england.nhs.uk/long-read/fra…

What mitigations do care homes have in place now, during the ongoing pandemic @covidinquiryuk?
Tomorrow at 12pm, the Inquiry will publish its sixth report: ‘Care Sector’ (Module 6). Soon after, you will be able to watch the Inquiry Chair, Baroness Hallett’s statement on her findings and recommendations via the Inquiry YouTube channel 📺.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the number of kids with Long Covid in England & Scotland nearly DOUBLED in a year between Mar 2023 & Mar 2024, rising to over 111K. That’s over 1K NEW cases in kids PER WEEK across the year. That was over 2 years ago now. And then ONS stopped tracking it.

ONS is no longer tracking prevalence of Long Covid… …but, at the last count, the # of children with Long Covid had nearly DOUBLED in a year (between Mar 2023 & Mar 2024), rising to over 111K in England & Scotland. That’s over 1K NEW cases in children PER WEEK across the year.

A huge thank you to @InclusiveNew for pursuing this and ensuring that changes were made to correct this very obvious error. More details in this thread ⬇️
🎉Success is not a word commonly seen in relation to securing positive change to infection prevention and control policy but I'm delighted to have some to report, having written to point out that it is an error to say no infectious person should wear an FFP3 mask 🧵

According to the revised Scottish infection & prevention control manual for healthcare workers ""RPE [FFP3] should never be worn by an infectious person as the respirator filters incoming air and not the air being expelled by the wearer." 🧵

They responded to my query to say "the Guidance Team will review the wording and consider amendments to improve clarity". It seems they did. Here's what it says now 👏 👇

That means both Scotland & Wales now have accurate guidance, at least on that one point🥳 Of course, there are still huge problems. But on this occasion, politely querying an error seems to have done the job! I don't know if others also raised it with them. Thank you if you did🙏

🔥Peer-reviewed research (NEJM, Nature, etc.) shows COVID causes measurable IQ drops (3–9 points), accelerates Alzheimer’s pathology, and stacks organ damage with every reinfection. Read the 🧵. Then repost it. Most people still treat this like a seasonal cold. The data clearly says otherwise!! #IWarnedYou #AvoidSars2 #AvoidReinfections
Making a new COVID research thread bc this website is trash. Part 2 of a working thread of published research on COVID 19. Every claim links to a real study. Published, peer-reviewed research from journals like Nature, The Lancet, BMJ, and Nature Medicine. Not speculation.

COVID-19 may leave a biological footprint far beyond the lungs. ➡️ A review of post-COVID research highlights how persistent inflammation, endothelial and microvascular injury, mitochondrial dysfunction, immune dysregulation and fibrotic remodeling may affect the lungs, heart, kidneys, skeletal muscles, brain and blood vessels. ➡️ Even after the acute infection resolves, the body’s repair machinery may continue to shape the aftermath—through altered energy production, damaged microcirculation and, in some patients, tissue scarring. ➡️ The big message: Long COVID is not simply a lingering respiratory illness; it can represent a multisystem process involving tissue injury, immune responses and abnormal repair. The mechanisms and extent of damage vary considerably, and persistent structural injury is not present in everyone. medicaljournals.eu/index.php…
