The talk about Carlton and Richmond losing the season opener doesn’t really bother me, tbh. But the marquee slot most in need of revision is and has been obvious for some time: ANZAC Day. It should be reserved for the Grand Final rematch and hosted by the reigning premier. If that takes the match interstate we can have a chat about the two teams who fill a slot at the MCG - but rotating that fixture would provide great exposure to and experience for a number of clubs. And, crucially, place a high profile, high quality, highly anticipated match up in a key slot. And if neither of those matches feature Essendon and Collingwood, they can be paired off to play on ANZAC Round. Footy was played on the day before 1995. These teams pioneered nothing yet have perpetual claim to the day and occasion - more, any two teams would’ve made the occasion what it is if given the same opportunity.
