A great team effort to get into culture one of the most abundant and ubiquitous microbial eukaryotes Tyrannomonas regina (CRY1). It is widely distributed in freshwater ecosystems across six continents. Genomics reveal a compact genome and the presence of associated giant viruses.
Heterotrophic nanoflagellates in lakes ingest 10–20 bacteria/hour, removing roughly 1/3 of all prokaryotes daily but most remain uncultured and unsequenced. We devised a new cultivation strategy to describe one such predator here 🦖🔬
