Wakili, do you sometimes rob Peter to pay Paul by using payments from one client to cover expenses on another client’s file? What happens when a client cannot pay, yet their matter still needs your attention? A law firm is a business. How you bill, collect fees and manage each file matters. Join me for Episode 2 of Chamber 10: The Business of Law with TerryAnne Muthoni Managing Partner @simbaadbo as we explore how to build a sustainable legal practice. 🎥 Watch on YouTube: JIngutiah #Chamber10 #WhereLawMeetsLife #TheBusinessOfLaw

Yesterday, I joined my colleagues from the JSC in an engagement with the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) to advocate for increased funding for the Judiciary and JSC. Over the last four years, sustained engagements have contributed to significant growth in the budget, supporting improved service delivery and access to justice. Key funding priorities were informed by institutional needs and feedback received during public hearings. We presented the previous financial year’s budget performance and outlined priorities for the supplementary budget. I appreciate the continued support of JLAC members, many of whom are fellow advocates, in championing adequate funding for the JSC and judiciary.

From Legal Aid to the Judicial Service Commission: A Journey of Service and Purpose. From my early days in legal aid and human rights advocacy to serving on the Judicial Service Commission, my journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to justice, human dignity and the rule of law. Some experiences never leave you, including the story of a six-year-old girl rescued from forced marriage. Every step of my journey has reinforced one conviction, the law must serve people, especially the most vulnerable. Thank you, @NationAfrica for sharing a glimpse of my journey. I want to offer an apology to the people of Nairobi, Kenya. The passion you have your city and homeland is amazing… We all make mistakes. I misspoke, and I am sorry to anyone I have offended.🙌

Legal Aid: Together, We Laid the Foundation. The Journey Continues In 2008, LSK and civil society organisations offering legal aid joined other institutions, under the leadership of the Office of the Attorney General, to help develop a national legal aid framework for Kenya. The National Legal Aid and Awareness Programme pilot project tested what was possible. I am glad to have been part of that work as a FIDA Kenya representative. The 2010 Constitution strengthened the foundation for legal aid, and the Legal Aid Act, 2016 established the National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) to give effect to those constitutional provisions. Over the years, JSC has continued to advocate for increased funding for the Judiciary’s pro bono programme. Its allocation grew from KSh 63.6 million in FY 2023/24 to KSh 150 million in FY 2025/26. However, court decisions and persistent concerns raised by the National Assembly regarding NLAS’s statutory mandate to provide legal aid informed the transition of these services to NLAS. On Wednesday 7th October 2026, I participated in the joint Judiciary–LSK transition committee meeting, where the transition report was shared and members’ concerns discussed. Having been part of the earlier efforts to build a national legal aid framework, this moment carries special meaning for me. As these services move to NLAS, our commitment remains clear: outstanding bills must be paid, advocates’ concerns addressed, and those who rely on legal aid supported throughout the transition. I also urged colleagues to participate in the budget-making processes of JSC, the Judiciary, NLAS and other justice-sector agencies. These are opportunities to shape funding priorities and ensure that the needs of advocates and the people we serve are heard.

Nairobi was just chilling then boom, it’s catching strays. I’m left wondering is Nairobi that ugly compared to other African Cities or is it the black people that make these cities it ugly hence the comparison by this reporter.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a reminder that mental health matters to all of us. The legal profession can be demanding. Heavy workloads, tight deadlines and everyday pressures can leave us stressed, overwhelmed or burnt out. Findings from the @ABAesq surveys have highlighted the mental health challenges facing lawyers, reminding us that these struggles are real and cannot be ignored. Over time, I have learnt to cope through debriefing, family time, social media breaks and dancing! 💃🏽 How do you recharge? Let's support one another. Seeking help is strength. Yesterday, I ran a quick informal WhatsApp poll asking what role we as Kenyan lawyers should play in the AI governance debate, and the responses from 104 colleagues were super clear! Over 62% said we should actively shape policy, law, and standards. 26% highlighted protecting human rights and freedoms, and nearly 17% pointed to ensuring accountability. Only 3% felt we should wait and see. What this feedback translates to is simple: as advocates, we need to understand the inner workings of AI tools, not just use them. Because AI governance is fundamentally a rule of law and public interest issue, we cannot simply react to disputes after they happen. Instead, we must proactively build technical expertise, drive policy around privacy and liability, and ensure emerging technologies remain firmly anchored in our constitutional values. As AI keeps growing in Kenya, we really can't afford to sit on the sidelines! Getting involved in setting these ground rules is so important for our collective future, and I'm really looking forward to having more of these great conversations with you all. Have a lovely week ahead.
