In 𝑍𝑎𝑛𝑧𝑖𝑏𝑎𝑟 𝑊𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝐶𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑦 (2024), Dr. Nathanael Mathews revisits the history of a Swahili-speaking Afro-Arab diaspora connecting East Africa and Oman. Similarly, in 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑒́𝑒 (2022), Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse explores the fate of Afro-Belgian Métis children forcibly separated from their families during Belgian colonial rule in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite their different historical contexts, both books illuminate underdocumented diasporic histories whose cultural traces endure across Eastern African societies, Belgium, and Oman. “Living in Gitwe, maybe even more than in the rest of Bugesera, meant living on the turf of big, wild animals. The lions and buffalo soon left us in peace, but the elephants were drawn to the banana grove as soon as it was planted, and they feasted all night long. The leopards were forever prowling among the houses. They were like cats: every family had its own. It would come inside in the night.” Scholastique Mukasonga (𝐶𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠) Also Read: 𝐶𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑛𝑔 newyorker.com/magazine/2018/… 𝑊𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑅𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑛 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒 fmus.org/women-and-the-rwand… 𝐵𝑢𝑔𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑎’𝑠 𝑗𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑦: 𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 1 newtimes.co.rw/article/39871… #OralHistory #Storytelling #Memory #DigitalMuseum

“This is a book of two children’s stories of survival. It is not a book for children. It’s a book for adults about the depravity of adults. A horrifying book. And yet an exquisitely beautiful book, a book honoring the truth of genocide and the use of story and art to heal.” 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲, artist and author of Portraits of Racial Justice: Americans Who Tell the Truth. amazon.com/Healing-Genocide-… #Art #Healing #Memory #History #DigitalMuseum

“Preservation whereby gruesome evidence of the killings was protected from removal and frozen in time comprised the earliest initiatives, which began before the sites were formalized as memorials and a full year before the Genocide Memorial Commission was created…. The first preservation efforts took place at the Nyarubuye and Ntarama Churches, rendering them places of witness that rendered the genocide viewable long after its occurrence.” Delia Duong Ba Wendel, (2025) read.dukeupress.edu/books/bo… 𝐀𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝: 𝑆𝑢𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑜𝑠𝑡-𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑀𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑅𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎, by Stephanie Wolfe, Omar Ndizeye and Anna-Marie De Beer tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1… #SitesOfMemory #GenocideAgainstTutsi #CulturalMemory #DigitalMuseum

#Literatur #GenozidAnDenTutsi #GusomaChallenge #Resilienz #Bildung #DigitalesMuseum

“The use of derogatory terms played a significant role in laying the social groundwork for the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda. Linguistic practices and the norms that govern them do not operate alone; they shape and are shaped by collateral social practices and norms.” Lynne Tirrell Read more: silverbronzo.wordpress.com/w…… #GenocidePrevention #Linguisticviolence #Linguisticnorms #NeverAgain
