Last year, I published my Amazon bestseller, THE EDGE: Outperform, Outshine, and Outlast in Your Career. Then someone asked, “Yvonne, why aren’t you promoting your book?” Good question! 😊 So I’m bringing you 12 short career lessons, one from each chapter. Here’s Lesson 1!

Mark Carney’s “Canada Strong” Has Become More Than a Campaign Slogan Stephen Harper’s government trusted Mark Carney with the Bank of Canada. Kevin O’Leary now says he has been “completely impressed” with how Carney has operated. Alberta and Ottawa are working together on energy, India is back negotiating trade with Canada, and Canada is moving deeper into Europe’s defence and economic architecture. At home, the consumer carbon charge is gone, the lowest federal income tax rate has been reduced, Canada has reached NATO’s two per cent defence spending benchmark, and Ottawa has introduced new systems aimed at accelerating major projects and breaking down internal trade barriers. Then came the investment push. Canada’s government says the September investment summit generated nearly C$500 billion in investment and financing commitments across different institutions and timelines, while new projects in energy, infrastructure, critical minerals, housing and manufacturing continue to move forward. But the biggest tests are still ahead. Housing construction has to rise substantially. Trade negotiations with India still have to produce a final agreement. Major projects need to move from announcements to completion. Investment commitments have to become real capital spending, jobs and higher productivity. So has “Canada Strong” become more than a campaign slogan? And can Mark Carney turn the momentum into results Canadians actually feel?

Trump said before reporters that he would acquire Canada by economic means, not militarily. We are in an economic war because Canada refuses to be a vassal state. Let’s get back to sanity all. #Canada #CanadaUSTradeWar

We need to get back to civility. If the US and Canada ever get back to cooperating, both countries would dominate. Canada has the resources to offer, US can develop them into the “things”

For those who forgot (or choose to forget) REPORTER: are you considering military force to annex and acquire Canada? TRUMP: no… ECONOMIC FORCE! That was JANUARY 7, 2025. Before @MarkJCarney was even a candidate for PM! How can you hear this and still trust this man, or think he’s negotiating in good faith!? He wants to cripple Canada in order to annex it Watch the interview again before you wonder whose fault is it for not reaching a deal.

Organizations can teach systems, processes, and technical skills. But as AI continues to automate tasks, competitive advantage will belong to professionals who can think critically, solve complex problems, and make strong decisions when the answer is not obvious.

Organizations can teach systems, processes, and technical skills. What is much harder to teach is sound judgment. How do you assess judgment when hiring?

I really wish someone had explained this to me earlier in my career. I was doing valuable work for years, but I wasn’t explaining the impact, and that made a bigger difference than I realized. Why Hard Work Does Not Get You Promoted—Yvonne E. Robinson youtu.be/o_QxQSHYx3s
