Kristina was abused (both physically and emotionally) for her queerness by her family when she was growing up, although she eventually found happiness away from them, those scars still run deep. So when she turns into one of the undead, she decides to shamble across Australia to kill them. As Kristina makes her way across the country—a journey which sees her feasting on flesh and cleverly evading soldiers—we get flashbacks that help us to understand why her need for revenge is so strong. Her childhood was incredibly dark, but because the novella is so short, the story never lingers too long on those hard-to-stomach moments.
