The Port of Long Beach set out to double its cargo volume and achieve 100% zero emissions by 2050—ambitious goals for one of the world’s busiest ports. In this episode, Dr. Noel Hacegaba, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, shares the innovative roadmap powering their transformation and why the port was honored with the first-ever Intermodal Innovation Award.
Most ports face mounting challenges: supply chain disruption, climate pressures, aging infrastructure, and real estate constraints. The team at Long Beach is tackling them head-on—with coordinated investments in rail, green technology, and new energy sources, all while keeping the global supply chain moving reliably and efficiently.
You'll hear:
- How the port increased cargo volumes by 44% over 20 years while cutting emissions by up to 98%
- Why efficiency and sustainability are inseparable in modern freight
- The strategic shift toward rail—and how cutting vessel-to-train times from days to hours is a game-changer
- How changing cargo sourcing from China to Southeast Asia is shaping port operations
- How Long Beach is laying the groundwork for next-gen energy infrastructure, from offshore wind to new nuclear technology
- What global partners, labor, and supply chain stakeholders think of Long Beach’s bold approach
For a behind-the-scenes look at how North America’s ports are shaping the future of intermodal freight—not just for cargo, but for the climate and tomorrow's workforce—this episode unpacks the big picture.

Christopher Brach, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Radiant Road & Rail and IANA Chair, explains how navigating the supply chain can be complex, especially when moving beyond basic truck shipping to intermodal logistics. Chris highlights how intermodal shipping involves multiple moving parts and partnerships across both customers and vendors. By collaborating with top drayage providers and building strong relationships, an Intermodal Marketing Company (IMC) can successfully piece this intricate puzzle together.

CALVERTON, MD. (October 8, 2026) — The Intermodal Association of North America today released the latest reading of its Intermodal Volume Index, a measure of North American intermodal freight activity. The October 2026 estimate of 105.1 is a predicted 0.3 percent decline from September but a 5.5 percent increase from the year prior, underlining the strength of this year’s intermodal volumes.
"We are expecting October to look remarkably similar to September, extending the peak season demand into the first part of Q4," said Andrew Sibold, Director of Economics. "A word of caution: with strong domestic share shifting from trucking and imports rebounding, there is the potential for capacity to tighten which would dampen the actual results."
Against a 2017–19 baseline set to 100, IANA gauges what is happening right now — before the official monthly figures are published. It works by translating a high-frequency freight activity onto the same scale as the published index, giving shippers, carriers and analysts an early snapshot of current-month demand. The result is a real-time picture of the intermodal freight economy.

Winning freight is one thing. Keeping it is another.
Market conditions are opening the doors for intermodal in long-haul lanes. On Bloomberg Intelligence's Talking Transports podcast, Anne Reinke, IANA President & CEO, told Lee Klaskow that holding on to that freight over the long run comes down to three things: reliability, visibility, and resilience.

Who gets left behind if they don't act now?
In this episode of The Freight Table, host David Garofalo talks with supply chain and AI expert Curtis Pogue about how AI is reshaping intermodal transportation. They discuss how better visibility, data quality, and end-to-end supply chain thinking can help solve long-standing industry challenges. The conversation also explores the risks of delaying AI adoption and why companies that fail to adapt may struggle to stay competitive. The key takeaway: freight demand will continue to grow, but the winners will be those prepared to leverage AI and optimize the entire supply chain. Watch hubs.li/Q04yK2x90
Chris Brach from Radiant Logistics explains how the modern freight industry has shifted from a predictable cycle of highs and lows to an erratic, highly volatile market that can feel like a constant panic switch. To combat this extreme volatility, shippers can leverage intermodal transportation to build a highly stable and predictable logistics model. By committing annual freight volumes, businesses can secure stable, plannable rates from railroads. While intermodal shipping might require a day or so of extra transit time, companies can strategically use weekends and proactive planning to minimize disruption and establish a very solid supply chain foundation.
