The nor’easter lashing Nantucket with wind and rain this weekend has uncovered the remains of a shipwreck along the island’s south shore.
The fragment is likely from the 19th century schooner Warren Sawyer, a wooden ship that wrecked near Miacomet Beach on December 22, 1884.

Google Books is becoming a desert. Its regress is real: the knowledge we were assured was both safely stored and freely available, which led libraries and schools to get rid of their books, has retreated into the shadows. The internet of 2026 knows less than the internet of 2010.

What on earth has happened to Google Books? Searching any word within even a completely public-domain book, even when I've come to that page through the general search and can see the word on the very page I'm looking at, now just always yields "no results".

Why is Google Books removing access to out-of-copyright books that it once hosted as open access? There is a good chance that the mass-deaccession policy of libraries, on the ground that "it's available for free online", will be one of the most stupid acts of modern curatorship.

I go a lot to r/plasticfreeliving. Lots of good ideas, not just for clothing but even sponges to clean dishes made out of coco or loofah (the og 'sponge' actually). Not only are those natural, but they also better quality and not such big price dfference compared to petro-chemical-products
A bit too many climate-doomers, but there are plenty of good siggestions for subsitutes in there.

though Twitter is totally ephemeral, & all on Twitter know that what happens on Twitter matters only on Twitter & has not even a fleeting shadow in the real world, yet, to my astonishment, not one but two ultra-casual tweets of mine on the subject of Nolan's "The Odyssey" were pumped up into two (2) separate articles in The Guardian (!).
for one who'd written actual reviews for The Guardian years ago, & usually admires its essays, I have to say that I am somewhat shocked that The Guardian of all publications should be rummaging through the online Dumpster for something to reprint.
