Marty has run the New York City Marathon every year since 1980 and finished his 43rd tonight as the last man across the line. He said it would be his final one his mind is still willing, but his body isn’t.
A remarkable way to end the streak. Congratulations on 43 NYC Marathons, Marty. ❤️
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The runner’s name is James Thomas, not Marty. The person who filmed and spoke with him (@MickmickNYC) confirmed this. He is not the 90-year-old Marty Granoff (who ran his 6th NYC Marathon in 2026, last previously in 1983).

With that said, his pops thanked me Saturday for pouring into his talent because the last coach would not for two reasons (1) she had no experience as an athlete and (2) boxed him into a stereotype for black runners.
I saw what he was capable of day one and forced him to challenge himself and did not ease up on him one bit. We worked on form, speed, pace, endurance… You name it just for him to get where he was this weekend.
Representation really matters for black athletes in predominately white sports starting at the youth age.
My greatest accomplishment will always be raising the youth.
Can I brag for a moment with a long post?
This is my second year coaching cross country for this charter school and they’ve made it to states 2 years in a row under me.
We didn’t place at states, but so many of them PR’d. That shit was incredible. Last year my best athlete ran a 14:40 (bad run), but all season he’s improved and hit 14:07 during the season in his 2-mile.
At states, we agreed he couldn’t come in over 13:50.
In 2025, he placed 141st at 14:40. 2026? My guy came in at 12:26.9… Placed 79th out of 180 boys.
That was his BEST race and best time EVER on that course. I’m going to miss coaching him for sure.
