Social democratic state being better for supply side economics.....
Here's an irony for you: the vastly more interventionist postwar state was *much better* at supply side economics than the floppy post-Thatcher outsourcing-happy government I've grown up with has been

The right might call this predictable but it's actually amusing that Tory nationalisation's of operators like Trans Pennine, Northern and LNER dramatically improved services, and yet Labour can't pull the same trick

Public ownership is generally good but is massively secondary to funding and structure and this government refuse to use it to it's full advantage and seem keen to just reduce subsidy to the railways meaning it'll probably end badly

Possibly one of the most dangerous and disappointing statements an MP could make Courts are not the place to decide policy. They are too adversial, have no democratic oversight and care little for morals or sense unless they have been written down as 'precedent'
Replying to @CobaltCherry
That is exactly what should be left to courts and experts to prove. All legislation requires interpretation alongside the facts of the case and the intention of the law. This is designed to ensure that harmful practices are discouraged.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
It is the responsibility of elected MPs to make clear, precise laws, not pass vague legislation and leave judges to fill in the gaps while people's lives, liberty and futures hang in the balance. parliament.uk/about/how/role/ supremecourt.uk/cases/judgment…

It's worrying our MPs don't seem to twig how judicial overreach is corrupting our democracy as well

No one wants this. Either bring them into public ownership or don't - Don't add another layer of bureaucracy that'll serve no purpose other than to make reform even more difficult and pretend it's what the public wants
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham says he will introduce 8 "regional water councils" to oversee water companies "For the first time, local people will have a real say over what they need from their water company, whether that's cleaning up polluted rivers or building new reservoirs"

Not sure if he's trying to use these as vehicles for municipal water companies. This intermediate step isn't necessary. Takeover ThamesWater and give it to the GLA if you want to test out that idea

Some really depressing facts in here - as a young man much of it rings true amongst my friends. While housing isn't the only solution, a lot would be improved if young people had the same opportunities as older generations to live in a place of our own and be truly independent.
Relationships in the UK are on the decline. Today, we reveal that a 25 year old is 26 times more likely to live with his mum than his wife. Why does it matter? Because the quality of our relationships is one of the strongest predictors of a happy, healthy life. New project (1/3)👇

"Talents from Abroad: Foreign Managers and Productivity in the United Kingdom" showed how British firms who recruited foreign leadership became 23.3% more capital intensive resulting in 4.9% rise in productivity
It's quite funny that while the UK government does share a great deal of blame for our productivity crisis arguably our own business leadership is equally, if not more, at fault because of their anti-investment, short termist approach

'If I was running Britain like a business, a lot of people would have been fired.' Is the Chancellor getting too much blame for a bad economy? 'No', says businesswoman Emma Sinclair, 'the wrong man's in the job'.

There is a consistent pattern of the government drastically underestimating demand for rail travel. We should seriously question why estimates are often out by a factor of 2 or more

Just finished this, best book I've read all year. Fascinating history of British energy and beautifully written If you wish to learn about how we can get out of the energy crisis we find ourselves in, go give it a read

Sounds like we need a new rail line between London and Manchester 🤔
Today we've rejected proposals for additional services on the West Coast Main Line after our assessment found they would likely increase delays and cancelled trains for passengers. We've also approved one existing Avanti service to carry passengers. ➡️orr.gov.uk/search-news/orr-r…

The worst line on this graph is that for children. The highest poverty rate and rising. Working families are struggling and wealthy pensioners with inflation beating pension increases for the last 15 years are still demanding more and more.
Some have taken objection to the idea that pensions should not rise faster than wages, but working age people have higher poverty rates than pensioners, so does it really make sense to prioritise universal welfare payments to pensioners over policies for working age people?

One of the charts I discuss in the post. That's a hell of a change in a single generation.
New post: Young people are increasingly unhappy. It's a real phenomenon + nothing to do with "snowflakes". There are lots of standard culprits - social media, school, economy - but none explain the long-term trend. So what is going on? (£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/the-agen…

A 128 page application from Hackney council to Hackney council for a space in a residential block to be returned to its original use as a 1 bed council flat. Councillors sent application back for more work. A clue to both inadequate housing stock and feeble productivity.
NEW: This is a story about just how hard it is to build in Hackney Hackney's councillors failed to approve the council’s own application to turn ‘community flat’ back into a one-bed council flat. – The application ran to 128 pages – "Community Involvement" started 2 years ago – The replacement meeting room is a four-minute walk away – Councillors still spent 90 mins debating it and then demanded the council come back with more evidence samdumitriu.com/p/how-hard-i…
