“Poverty is the sole refuge from highway billboards. On the roads near my village, we are afflicted by next to no boardings--because we are too short of cash to be worth an advertisers’s investment. Also, I suspect, local sentiment still opposes disfigurement of the landscape: such signs as get erected sometimes are knocked down or mutilated, within a few weeks. Did I know the worthy patriots who commit this laudable vandalism, I would subsidize them.”--Russell Kirk, "Billboards Irk Kirk," TO THE POINT (September 10, 1963).

14 October 1066. Norman Duke “William the Conqueror” defeated and killed Harold Godwinson of England at the Battle of Hastings and claimed the English throne. The battle occurred approximately 7 miles northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex.

Today in 1066, William the Duke of Normandy defeats England's King Harold II a few miles inland from the coastal village of Hastings (at the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex). Although fewer than 20,000 take part in the clash, its impact is far-reaching and changes the course of English history.

On this day in 1780, 900 Rebels defeat an army of Tory militia at the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina. It's remembered as the largest engagement of the Revolutionary War fought entirely by American forces.
On this day in North Carolina history, October 7, 1780, Kings Mountain, NC.
Redcoat Patrick Ferguson told the mountain men of NC he’d march over the ridges, hang their leaders, and lay their country waste with fire and sword. Bad idea. North Carolina doesn’t take a threat like that and not hand out repercussions.
Joseph Winston out of Surry. Benjamin Cleveland out of Wilkes. Joseph McDowell and the Burke County boys. Lincoln County men under Chronicle and Dickson. They linked up with the Overmountain men who’d come through the gaps and pointed the whole crowd at Ferguson’s Loyalists camped on Kings Mountain.
About an hour. Patriots were up the slope. Ferguson dead. Loyalist line broken. Roughly 28 of ours killed, 60 some were wounded. More than between 150 to 260 of theirs dead and hundreds marched off as prisoners. Cornwallis felt that ass kicking all the way to Yorktown.
We fought along with our neighbors south and sparked the turning point in the Revolution. They can put the monument on the other side of the state line. Doesn’t change who climbed that hill. Surry. Wilkes. Burke. Lincoln. Mountain men who heard “fire and sword” as a threat and loaded up.
They didn’t wait to be ask to fight. Freedom didn’t get handed to North Carolina. We gathered a militia, climbed a hill with passion in our hearts, with fire in our eyes and TOOK IT from those who planned to take it !!
Thats North Carolina!! Thats the spirit of the OLD NORTH STATE!!
If you can trace your family roots back to the Revolution in NC, EAST or WEST, then that spirit and blood still lies within YOU!! 🇺🇸
YOU DON'T NEED A POLITICIAN AT THE STATE OR FEDERAL LEVEL TELLING YOU LIES ABOUT HOW GOOD THINGS ARE... WHEN THEY ARE NOT AND THAT YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!
YOU DON'T NEED BIG GOVERNMENT ON YOUR BACK TELLING YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO GIVE UP MORE OF YOUR FREEDOM, YOUR SOVEREIGNTY, YOUR MONEY, WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY STRETCHED THIN MAKING ENDS MEET!!
YOU DON'T NEED TO SEND YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS TO GO FIGHT SOME FOREIGN LANDS WAR WHEN WE HAVE WAR DAILY IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS AND STREETS!!
YOU KNOW ALL THESE THINGS BECAUSE THAT REVOLUTIONARY BLOOD RUNS THROUGH YOUR VIENS!! YOU KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO FIGHT!!
THE ONLY QUESTION YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF IS... HOW LONG DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP PUTTING UP WITH TYRANNY?
YOUR REVOLUTIONARY FOREFATHERS ANSWERED WITH A RESOUNDING...
NEVER AGAIN!! 🇺🇸💪

Today in 1862, the Confederate invasion of Maryland is halted by the Union army at Antietam Creek near the town of Sharpsburg. Each side suffers an appalling 10,000 casualties in just 12 hours of savage fighting. It will be remembered as the bloodiest single day in U.S. history.
