For giraffes, slopes are a nope! 🦒🌍
New research presented by Jessica Granweiler at this year's annual meeting reveals that giraffes in South Africa stick to flat landscapes, avoiding slopes steeper than 20 degrees. Why? Navigating steep terrain requires more energy and increases the risk of falling.

Amazing talk by Henry Richards from @DerbysWildlife updating us on #WillingtonWetlands ‘ beavers and how they already transformed the area for the better. A great example for other rewilding projects in the UK and Europe! 🦫 – at Glossop, England

It's excellent that @JGranweiler is studying male-male sparring in wild #giraffes, beautiful #animals who need all the #conservation knowledge we can muster. The details explained here about the males' choices made during sparring are very cool. nytimes.com/2021/09/17/scien…
Thank you @JoshuaLearn1 and @nytimes for this lovely piece and for getting the word out there about our research!

Celebrating #Worldgiraffeday2021 today! Looking back at my fieldwork in South Africa for my paper on sparring dynamics in male giraffes (as you can see with the two males on the right). Anyone interested in reading about it: bit.ly/3iWPYjb
Very proud to now be part of the team that is increasing our understanding of the behaviour and ecology of such an iconic species! And excited for working with them again in the future! @Susanne_Shultz
I am proud to say that I've published my first paper! If anyone is interested in reading some cool facts about male giraffes sparring dynamics then have a look here: doi.org/10.1111/eth.13199
