As is my August 21 tradition, I will be revisiting "Regarding Cocktails", remembering a friend, mentor and inspiration, Sasha Petraske, who died on this day 8 years ago. Wherever you are, hold a proper daiquiri high at 9pm EST in his honor. He is missed by many.

"In particular, the complaint alleges that the out-of-date water quality standards–last updated in the mid-1990s-have allowed a proliferation of harmful algal blooms, collapse of native fish & riparian vegetation species,” according to a press statement from the Tribes & groups."

"Recreational & commercial salmon fishing is closed on the ocean in CA and most of OR this year, due to the collapse of fall-run Chinook salmon on the Sacramento & Klamath River watersheds, spurred by poor (read: greedy) water & fishery management by state & Fed governments."

It's sarcasm, in case it wasn't clear. The non-profit/military/prison industrial complex is not going to save us. History must repeat itself and quickly. Off with their heads.

COLONIAL. GREED. NON-NATIVE INVASIVES! HUMANS are not the problem. COLONIALISM is. #DECOLONIZE (before it's too late!)

Colonial greed transformed the wetlands of Lāhainā. This included water diversions for sugar plantations & land use change from agricultural production to livestock grazing. The same invasive grasses that white sugar barons planted in 19 & 20c exploded like napalm in high winds.

Nowhere is it more clear right now how dire the situation on earth is. #Decolonize is not just a hashtag. It's an urgent #CallToAction. #FireRx is #LandBack in action. We either burn on our terms or nature's. We know which we prefer. #LahainaFires

I got ahold of some open satellite data from @Maxar and made this YouTube video of the Lahaina area, showing damage block by block. Really a terrible scene, with so much trauma to come, but I am hoping this is helpful. youtu.be/U0zrM1AxsGI #Lahaina #Maui #Hawii #Fires #Damage

Let. The. Fires. Burn. If landowners harden their homes & use beneficial fire on their own properties, when fire inevitably visits their neighborhood, it will burn with significantly less intensity and be exponentially easier to defend against. Fire dependency is non-negotiable.

New thread on lightning busts, the resulting fires and their ecological effects. The better we fire-safe and prepare our communities, the less we have to fear the large backcountry fires that have swept California's wildlands since the dawn of time.

Congrats on the quote, Z! Really appreciate everything you're doing. This is the perfect year for promoting summer burning & yet we STILL didn't get our permit, w more of the same nonsensical reasoning why not. Sacramento is saying the right things, but what about the units?!

Got some ink in this article about California's slower-than-usual wildfire season. I wouldn't say this is our "best wildfire season", though. Fires are necessary, and acres unburned this year will get fire under more severe conditions down the road. mercurynews.com/2023/07/30/w…

Fighting Fire with Fire: The EPA Must Harness Beneficial Fire to Reduce PM2.5 Emissions

Beneficial fire is key to addressing the risk of wildfires and their harmful emissions. To meet its public health goals, the EPA must act to promote—not inhibit—its use.

Was just in Western Lassen County. It is dry in the sun, but cool in shade. Meadows are very wet, normally seasonal creeks are gushing. Weather and fuels conditions in the high country are generally still within underburning prescriptions. /1

Everyone wants to talk about stolen land today, but nobody wants to talk about stolen heritage. #Landback to who? The Tribal govs & leaders who violate their own treaties & tribal constitutions to disenroll Elders, their families, & deny Children & Black Natives their heritage?
