This is how it feels when you want to discuss or indulge in a romantic pair for narrative reasons, but we have a whole generation without a speck of literary background who boil down those narrative constructs to an “age gap” and poison all discussion

Yup, modern audiences are very literalist and this is affecting how art is produced as well. You can trace the evolution of fictional conceptions of teenagers by studying each iteration of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for example.

People hate Romeo and Juliet as a result of its questionable romantic ethics because they haven't been taught not to care about that. Among other things, a massive part of English lit is to teach you not to care about that, to see lit as a work and not as a story.
