Ever drifted through a river of autumn flowers?🌺🚣
⠀
Along the Tsuya River, red spider lilies and cosmos bloom from mid-September to early October, creating a vibrant ribbon of color along the riverbanks. Step aboard a traditional Japanese wooden boat and glide quietly between the flowers as a local boatwoman rows you along the calm water, where reflections of the blooms and the surrounding scenery create a truly unforgettable seasonal journey✨💙

“Why are ppl so obsessed with the autumn colors in Japan? It looks exactly same anywhere else.”
Geee... I wonder why? 🤪
But seriously, autumn might very well be the only time of year when I wouldn’t try to stop someone from going to Kyoto.
While I’m normally on something of a crusade against Kyoto and regularly advise people not to go because of the overtourism, even I find myself marveling at the majesty of the city’s autumn splendor.
Simply put, Japan’s ancient capital will leave you breathless with its beauty once the fall foliage comes out in late November.
Alas, all that jaw-dropping gorgeousness does come at a cost, and you’ll need to contend with crowds of locals who flock to Kyoto during autumn too.
Still, there are plenty of places where you can enjoy the fall serenity and take in the seasonal vibes without the sound of a million camera shutters going off around you.
Some of my personal favorites include Daigo-ji, Ruriko-in, and Bishamon-do, but that’s honestly only just the start.
If you want more, hit me up in the replies and I’ll share a few more despite very much wanting to gatekeep them.
Thought you arrived in Japan too early for autumn leaves? Not in Kamikōchi 🍂
Tucked high in the Japanese Alps, Kamikōchi is one of the first places in Japan to welcome autumn, with the season beginning here as early as October!
What makes visiting here truly special is the total absence of cars: private vehicles are completely banned, leaving you with little more than the sounds of nature 🏔️
