I kept this story in my pocket for a long time....
September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day.
Every year in Pittsburgh the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys.
My first year as manager in Pittsburgh was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on.
We didn't win.
19 consecutive losing seasons.
2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive.
After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over.
"My mom wants to talk to you."
We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons.
She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up.
Roberto Jr. translated.
"My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy."
She was staring right at me.
Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth:
"I promise you, Vera. That won't happen."
Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it."
I said, "I hope I can keep it too."
I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it.
The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20.
On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field.
And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life.
The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug.
Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them.

A legacy that speaks for itself.
More than three decades. Four WHL Championships. A Memorial Cup. Countless Rockets who went on to the next level.

Francis's mom, Joanne, was cheering so loudly she could be heard in the background on the TV broadcast. She was later awarded "Fan of the Game."

John McKeachie was an institution, a massive personality who lit up our lives in so many ways. Flamboyant didn't cover it. Loved every moment in his presence. May the Lord rest his soul.

McKeach came out to YVR airport with a camera to interview me after I got through the PGA Tour Q-School successful.
My family was there too. John started to interview my twin boys Conor and Garrett, who are 7 at the time.
John asked Conor, “Where is your dad?” Conor replies, “he’s on an airplane!” McKeach says, “Was he playing golf?” Conor said, “Yeah, but not on the airplane!”
They played it on air.
RIP McKeach.

In the late 1990s John McKeachie hosted McKeachie's Hockey Talk on #CBC Vancouver after @hockeynight. You could call in to chat with him and players after games.🤯On this night in 1999, Mark Messier was his guest, and caller Mark needed a little prompting.😁
Good night, McKeach.

Sports Broadcaster John McKeachie passes away at 82-year-of-age
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that John McKeachie passed away peacefully on August 11th, surrounded by his family.
While British Columbia knew John as one of its most beloved and enduring sports media personalities, those closest to him knew him first and foremost as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend — roles he cherished above all others and considered his greatest achievements. To family and friends, he was bigger than life, instantly recognizable by his booming voice and his love of a good story that could captivate a room.
John's own passion for sports started long before the cameras and microphones, playing Little League baseball in his hometown of Victoria. Though he'd be the first to joke he never made it big as an athlete himself, that love of the game never left him. Well into his life he kept up a weekly basketball game with a close group of friends and was a regular on the ice rink and the golf course though, by his own admission, he always wished he were a little better at them.
That genuine love of sport carried him into a celebrated 40-year career in sports television, radio, and print, including 27 years as a sports anchor at BCTV and national work with CBC and CTV, covering two Olympic Games.
Earlier this year, John was named to the BC Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2026 in the Media category, recognition that meant a great deal to him, reflecting both the community he served so faithfully and the career he cared about so deeply. Full details of his career can be found via the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
Born and raised in Victoria, BC, John spent his working life in Vancouver, where he continued to reside with much of his family close by.
Details of a service will be available in the coming days.

1970’s: I never heard anyone talk about “the links”, “dem bums”, “football of the North American variety”. I became familiar with those phrases listening/watching John McKeachie. Unique. Fun. Clearly in love with sports. Not cookie cutter. He was an inspiration. RIP my friend
