Happy to see the 2nd manuscript of my thesis on bioRxiv! We explore the subdivision of the withanolide BGC in Physalis into two sub-clusters with tissue-specific expression linked to chromatin differences. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Sub-functionalization and epigenetic regulation of a biosynthetic gene cluster in Solanaceae

Biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) are sets of often heterologous genes that are genetically and functionally. Among eukaryotes, BGCs are most common in plants and fungi, where they ensure the...

In this @PNASNews paper, we show how vital nonstomatal control of transpiration is for maintaining high assimilation rates in C4 plants in response to increased VPD. Plants like maize and sorghum enhance their water-use efficiency thanks to this mechanism. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2402233…
Diagram of the mechanism of nonstomatal control of transpiration as VPD increases, generating unsaturation in the substomatal cavity. The parameters in the figure are atmospheric water vapor concentration (wa), water vapor concentration on the leaf surface (ws), substomatal cavity water vapor concentration (wi), water vapor concentration at saturation (wsat), resistance to water diffusion through the plasma membrane (rp), cell wall water potential (Ψw), and cytosolic water potential (Ψc). Black dots represent cell wall fibers. The current theory suggests that aquaporins acting as transmembrane conduits close when VPD rises, increasing the resistance to water movement through the membrane of mesophyll cells (rp) and triggering unsaturation in the substomatal cavity.
