Lily is at her gym class this morning. I'm lurking in the corner with misty eyes. She sat down next to a shy girl. "Hi, my name is Lily. What's your name?" Shy responded, and Lily whispered, "I'll be your friend." And they both started to giggle. 😭🥺😊
This morning, Lily looked at me and said, "Daddy, when is YOUR MOM moving to her new house?" I couldn't help but laugh. She then said, "Well, you know what I mean, Daddy. She is your mom, right?!" Sassy three year old teenager. #lilybea #fatherhood

In the fall of 2006, as a newly transplanted 22-year-old, in midtown Manhattan, I avoided arrest. My Black friend, who was with me, did not. He was handcuffed, detained and brought to the police station. We committed the same act of jumping the turnstile.
