GAMECOCK FRESHMAN SPOTLIGHT: J’ZAVIEN CURRENCE Currence looks like somebody built him in a laboratory. The former South Pointe star arrives at South Carolina at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds—linebacker size with legitimate secondary movement skills. As a junior, he recorded 42 tackles, 16 pass breakups and two interceptions while also playing receiver and quarterback. That offensive experience should help him recognize routes and understand what opposing quarterbacks are trying to do. When I evaluate defensive backs, I look for length, recovery speed, physicality, change of direction and the ability to find the football without losing the receiver. Currence checks a lot of those boxes. The question isn’t whether he has the physical tools. It’s how South Carolina will use them. He could become a traditional safety, cover bigger receivers and tight ends, play near the line of scrimmage or develop into a versatile hybrid defender. You cannot coach 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds with those movement skills. Remember the name: J’Zavien Currence. #jzaviencurrence #gamecockcommunity #gamecockfootball
