Longish post, but please bear with it. As I reported on X yesterday, the head of the Jewish Representative of Ireland, Maurice Cohen, told a gathering in the Department of Foreign Affairs last night that the Herbert Park Hotel in Dublin had refused to allow a booking to go ahead of 70 rooms intended for delegates attending an international conference on combatting anti-Semitism. (The irony). Here are extended extracts from his speech: "When the World Jewish Congress began organising this SECCA Conference in Dublin, an event manager was appointed and one of her first jobs was to find accommodation. More than seventy people needed rooms, all of you here this evening, at a particularly busy time in Dublin, with Ireland holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. A shortlist was drawn up and we chose the Herbert Park Hotel in Ballsbridge. There was the usual discussion about rates and arrangements and then came confirmation that the rooms were reserved... The [hotel representative] asked me what SECCA was. I explained that it brought together Jewish community leaders from around the world and government appointed officials responsible for combating antisemitism. Most of those government officials were not Jewish. I told her that the conference was associated with Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, that government ministers would participate, and that some of those attending would be meeting the Taoiseach as well as other ministers. As I spoke, I noticed her manner change. There was a tension that had not been there before. Then she asked me a question I simply was not prepared for. 'Will the IDF be involved?' I remember looking at her and wondering whether I had heard correctly. The IDF? We were talking about a conference in Dublin on antisemitism, attended by Jewish community representatives, diplomats, civil servants and government officials. Nothing I had said had anything whatsoever to do with the Israeli army, yet somehow that was where the conversation had gone. Then came something even more disturbing. She told us that she would now have to consult the owners of the hotel, the Herbert Park Hotel, to determine whether we / you, would be permitted to stay there. More than seventy rooms which had already been booked and confirmed. A day or so later the answer came back. You / We could not. I thought afterwards about the extraordinary contrast. This was the hotel where I had celebrated New Year’s Eve, where I had raised glasses of champagne with friends, where I had celebrated my mother’s birthdays all the way to her 93rd year. For me it had always represented warmth and welcome. And now a group of people travelling to Dublin for a conference on antisemitism had been told that they could not stay there. [The hotel representative] told us that she would now have to consult the owners of the hotel, the Herbert Park Hotel, to determine whether we / you, would be permitted to stay there. More than seventy rooms which had already been booked and confirmed. A day or so later the answer came back. You / We could not. I thought afterwards about the extraordinary contrast. For me it had always represented warmth and welcome. And now a group of people travelling to Dublin for a conference on antisemitism had been told that they could not stay there. There is an uncomfortable irony in organising an international conference to discuss antisemitism and finding that, before the conference has even begun, you have already encountered something that forces you to ask exactly the questions the conference was created to address. How quickly does the word 'Jewish' change a conversation? How easily does a gathering about antisemitism become associated with the Israeli army? And how quickly can people who were welcome when they were simply seventy hotel guests become something rather different once they are known to be attending a Jewish conference? That is why I tell this story tonight. Because contemporary antisemitism does not always arrive wearing the language of the past. It does not always announce itself with a slur, a threat or a placard. Increasingly, it can present itself as a question, a precaution, a policy, a request for clarification. It begins by treating Jewish identity as evidence of political allegiance. It turns Jewish people into representatives of a foreign state, Jewish gatherings into security concerns, and ordinary acts of welcome into decisions requiring special permission. That is the danger of antisemitism today: not only that it excludes Jews, but that it makes their exclusion appear reasonable. The question about the IDF was not an innocent misunderstanding. It revealed how quickly Jewish identity can be collapsed into Israel, how quickly Israel can be collapsed into suspicion, and how quickly suspicion can become discrimination. Seventy rooms had been booked. Seventy people had been welcomed as guests. The only thing that changed was what they were understood to be. That is not a minor administrative inconvenience. It is a warning. Antisemitism survives by changing its vocabulary while preserving its logic: Jews are treated as different, suspect and collectively responsible. The words may be new, but the message is old. You may enter as an individual, but once you are recognised as Jewish, the terms of welcome can change. And that is why we still have a long way to go in Ireland, the land of 100,000 thousand welcomes: because the test of a society is not whether it welcomes people before it knows who they are. The test is whether it continues to welcome them after it does. Yes, a long way to go in Ireland and The Herbert Park Hotel." @Alan__Shatter @RachelMoiselle @abrahamson_ed

A year ago, the Palestinian Authority promised to hold elections in 2026 if Canada recognized a Palestinian state. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has now postponed those elections for at least another year. It’s been 20 years of promising and postponing elections. But then, @MarkJCarney knew that.

Dear Mr. Mamdani, As a fellow Muslim who has studied these subjects deeply, I believe antisemitism will be minimized when we stop treating Israel as something entirely separable from the history, identity, and heritage of the Jewish people. My dear brother in Islam, the prophets, kings, and heroes of the Children of Israel mentioned in the Quran belonged to the people of Israel. Jesus said of Nathanael: “Here truly is an Israeli in whom there is no deceit.” Modern-day Israel exists in a land with a profound historical connection to the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah. In my view, an educated Muslim should have no problem acknowledging Israel’s existence or recognizing the Jewish people’s ancient connection and sovereignty to that land. We can recognize Palestinian suffering and aspirations, without denying Jewish history or the Jewish connection to the Land of Israel. I believe trying to completely separate Israel from the question of antisemitism is part of the problem, not the solution. May the God of Israel, whom King David (a prophet and king revered in Islam) praised, guide all of us toward truth, understanding, and peace. Yours, Loay

The responses to this thread by @BoyGeorge and his very reasonable question display the usual whataboutery from most. Let’s say I was appalled by the October 7 attacks, my heart goes out to each and every victim as should everyone’s in the west. And let’s say I was equally appalled by the Israel response in Gaza, my heart goes out to every innocent person killed or injured. Why is it not alright for Boy George to sing in support/solidarity of the victims of Oct 7? Can’t even get the song on @Spotify or @AppleMusic. Yet Kneecap, for example can openly praise Hamas on stage who are a terrorist organisation, or Hezzbolah, and face relatively no issues, the music is still available. Why is that?

Can somebody ask @NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani why he isn’t plannning to arrest Pezeshkian, the president of the Islamic Republic, who is attending the same UN conference as Netanyahu in September? Tens of thousands of Iranians murdered in two days. The worst massacre of our time. No speech? No arrest? No performance?

Mayor Mamdani, Yes we reflect the history of the Jewish people and what happened on Tisha B’Av in Jerusalem 2,600 and 1,956 years ago and our never ending yearning and dream of the third Beis Hamikdosh rebuilt in Jerusalem. Your words yesterday incited hatred and will bring violence against Jews across New York City. More than 100,000 Israelis live in New York City, who have served and continue to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Hundreds of thousands of Israeli visitors who are currently serving in the IDF also come to New York City each year. You know your repeated accusations that Israel deliberately targets babies and hospitals fuels hostility and attacks toward Jews and Israelis in New York, regardless of whether they have any connection to the conflict. The summer is always a period of heightened tensions and increased incidents of violence. Yet you continue using inflammatory rhetoric without regard for the safety of New Yorkers who are targets because of it. Words have consequences. In your pre election interviews you kept deflecting this issue by saying you will be focusing on the safety and progress for the citizens of NYC: You know everything I wrote above, and you know the risk that your dangerous and false accusations that Israel deliberately targets babies and hospitals place a target on Jews throughout New York City. Do you want to set the city on fire and see Jews and Jewish institutions attacked?

Syria slaughtered their Palestinians during the civil war. Ironically, Ken doesn't mention that Egypt, Jordan, UAE, and all of the other countries that signed onto the Abraham accords, are all able to have peaceful relations with Israel, but the Palestinians can't. Ken's picked the right question, but he's skewing the scope to try to fit his narrative. When you widen the scope, you see that there are countries and people able to have peace with Israel.

I’m horrified by the rise in antisemitism not just in the US but around the globe. It scares me that there doesn’t seem to be a greater sense of urgency to combat it. We have a moral obligation to condemn it & stand by our Jewish loved ones.

A non-targeted baby that dies in an airstrike is a tragedy. A baby that dies at the hands of his captors by being beaten to death is a violation of human decency. Both babies died. Both are innocent. Both deaths are tragic. But there is zero moral equivalence between the two realities. Those who understand this are members of the human family. Those who don't, not so much.

The Democratic Socialists of America is waging a smear campaign against Governor Josh Shapiro. Even though the Governor is well within the mainstream of the Democratic Party—a mainstream from which the DSA itself is far removed—the DSA is nonetheless singling out the Governor simply because he is Jewish. It should be called out for what it is: antisemitism. Just as troubling, the DSA refuses to utter the word ‘Israel,” instead calling it “the Zionist Project in Palestine.” The antisemitism of the DSA has no place in the Democratic Party.

The Free Palestine movement is not about freeing Palestinians. It is about pursuing a “final solution” against the world’s only Jewish State, which is home to half of the world’s Jewish population. When antisemites reveal their antisemitism by calling for a genocide against Jews, believe them.
