But one careless authorization could put every asset inside it at risk. Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade introduced EIP-7702, allowing traditional wallets (EOAs) to gain smart-account functionality without changing their addresses. This unlocks powerful features: • Multiple transactions in a single action
• Gas fees sponsored by third parties
• Custom spending permissions
• Session keys for automated applications and AI agents But there’s a security trade-off every wallet owner should understand. A malicious delegation can give an attacker control over your assets without requiring another signature. How EIP-7702 Actually Works Instead of deploying a completely new wallet, EIP-7702 allows your existing address to delegate execution to a smart contract. You sign an authorization specifying the delegate contract, chain ID, and nonce. Once that authorization is included in a transaction, your wallet can execute the delegated contract’s logic in the context of your account. Your address stays the same. Your assets remain at that address. What changes is the code controlling how your account behaves. Three Security Risks You Cannot Ignore 1. Delegation doesn’t automatically expire Unlike temporary permissions, an EIP-7702 delegation remains active until it is replaced or explicitly cleared. Closing a website, disconnecting your wallet, or ending a session does not remove it. 2. A second signature may not be necessary Once delegation is active, the contract’s logic determines what actions are permitted. If malicious code exposes an unrestricted withdrawal function, an attacker may be able to drain assets without requesting another approval. 3. Chain ID 0 creates cross-chain exposure An authorization using chain ID 0 can be valid across multiple EIP-7702-compatible chains. That means a dangerous authorization may have consequences beyond the network where you originally signed it. How to Check Your Wallet You can inspect your wallet’s on-chain code using the Ethereum JSON-RPC method eth_getCode. A standard EOA generally returns: 0x A wallet with active EIP-7702 delegation returns a delegation indicator beginning with: 0xef0100 The remaining bytes identify the delegated contract address. Verify the delegate contract. Only authorize contracts from trusted providers after checking their identity and security documentation. Avoid chain ID 0. Use chain-specific authorizations unless cross-chain delegation is explicitly intended. Isolate automated agents. Give bots and AI agents separate accounts with limited funds and permissions. Monitor active delegations. Review wallet code and smart-account permissions alongside your token approvals.
