Veterans' Week honours those who have served Canada in war, conflict and peace. It includes Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8 and concludes with Remembrance Day on November 11.
My mind returns to the many people Angel and I served with. The shipmates and colleagues who stood watch beside us, shared the long days and made them lighter.
Across Vancouver Island and across Canada, that bond hasn't faded. Veterans and their families still look out for one another, and they have looked out for us too. Thank you for the camaraderie and the support. It has been an honour.
I know what service asks of members and their families.

A military is only as ready as the ammunition behind it.
The Auditor General found critical gaps in Canada’s combat ammunition, with stockpiles short of what our operational and NATO commitments require. The Minister of National Defence says there is progress to make. Meanwhile, I’ve heard accounts of soldiers in Latvia going on patrol with no ammunition in their rifles, backed by only a few days of artillery shells.
Having worn the uniform myself, I know readiness can’t wait. Canadians deserve to see the required ammunition levels, our NATO requirements and a real plan to meet them, tabled in Parliament.

The poppy flag is flying on Parliament Hill, a visible reminder that Canada remembers.
Thank you to the veterans, serving members, Legion members and families who joined us. A poppy is simple, but it says what matters: thank you, and we have not forgotten.
This year, loss has come close. On October 17, four soldiers died in a fire during training at CFB Wainwright: Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding and Private Hayden Lykkemark. Please hold them and their families in your thoughts.
Wear a poppy, attend a ceremony on November 11, and check in on a veteran or military family.
Lest we forget.

I recently seconded a motion calling on the government to put veterans and Canadian workers first. Yesterday, the government voted against it.
Under the Buy Canadian Policy, federal purchases are meant to go to Canadian suppliers by default. Yet the Canada Revenue Agency awarded a nearly $12 million security contract to a subsidiary of an American owned multinational supporting ICE deportations, over a Canadian not-for-profit that is the country’s largest employer of veterans. The bids differed by less than 1%.
The motion called on the government to award that contract to a Canadian supplier, and to reverse directives restricting military chaplains from praying at official functions.

Ottawa, ON – Yesterday, Conservative Shadow Minister for Defence Procurement Jeff Kibble’s Private Member’s Bill C-235 passed the House of Commons and will now proceed to the Senate.
“I am honoured to see the Respecting Families of Murdered and Brutalized Persons Act pass at its third reading in the House of Commons,” Kibble said. “I look forward to passing the torch on this Bill to the Senate, where I am confident it will be treated with the same compassion and dignity it received in the House of Commons.”
This legislation would amend the Criminal Code to empower judges, following jury input, to extend the parole ineligibility period for a person convicted of the abduction, sexual assault and murder of the same victim in the same event or series of events, requiring that the offender serve between 25 and 40 years of a life sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
That means long after a crime, families will not be forced back into a hearing room to face the person who took their loved one and relive the trauma.
“This bill is the result of the hard work, dedication and advocacy of many people,” Kibble continued. “From Jo-Anne Landolt, whose niece, Kimberly Proctor, was brutally tortured and murdered, to James Bezan, Conservative Shadow Minister for National Defence, who first introduced this legislation more than a decade ago, this has truly been a team effort. I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported this Bill and helped bring it to this important stage.”
“There is still more to be done,” Kibble concluded. “I will work with Senate colleagues to bring this legislation across the finish line and protect families from the pain of revictimization in the parole process.”

Nobody should ever be attacked for selling poppies, let alone cadets.
I am disgusted by the brutal attack on a Canadian Armed Forces member supervising young cadets selling poppies in Hamilton.
He stepped in after the cadets were assaulted. He was left with injuries police describe as life-altering.
He was helping young Canadians honour those who served. He should have gone home safely to his family.
No child should fear violence while selling a poppy. No Canadian should be brutalized for standing up for them. Those responsible for this cowardly attack must face the full consequences of the law.
My prayers are with this member, his family, and the young cadets affected by this horrific violence.
As Remembrance Day approaches, wear your poppy proudly. Support our veterans. And stand with the Canadians who serve and protect us.
A frozen bank account can stop a household in its tracks.
A Duncan resident came to my office after the CRA froze his account over an unpaid debt. My team worked with the agency to reactivate his payment plan, and his account has been unfrozen with garnishments paused.
If you’re stuck with a federal department or agency, my office can help you work through it.

For those of us who have worn the uniform, Remembrance is never just a date on the calendar. In our home, it runs deep.
On October 31, I joined the Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society, Legion members, and the young people of 100 Admiral Mainguy Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps and 744 Cowichan Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets for the annual White Cross Placement across South Cowichan.
One by one, each veteran resting in our community received a white cross, a poppy, a sprig of cedar and a salute.
These were our neighbours. Many came home and quietly built the communities we live in today.
Watching our cadets honour them with such care gave me real hope for the next generation.
As Shadow Minister for Defence Procurement, I carry their example with me to Ottawa. We owe it to those who served, and to those serving now, to make sure they have what they need.
If you pass by a local cemetery this month, take a moment to stop at a white cross. The crosses remain in place until the end of November.
Thank you to every volunteer who keeps this tradition alive. Lest we forget.

Happy Halloween, Vancouver Island!
To everyone heading out tonight, have fun, stay safe, and keep an eye out for the little ones crossing the street.

Our troops can’t defend Canada without the ammunition to do it.
The Auditor General found National Defence lacks reliable data on its ammunition, isn’t meeting its stockpile needs, and waits close to 19 months for deliveries even after contracts are signed.
We’re calling on the Auditor General to appear before the National Defence committee so Parliament can get to the bottom of it. Our sailors, soldiers and aviators deserve nothing less.

Canadian energy should be able to reach overseas markets from Canadian ports, safely and responsibly.
There is no tanker ban on BC’s south coast. Since Trans Mountain’s expansion, its Burnaby terminal can load as many as 34 tankers a month, bound for the Pacific past Vancouver Island. Those tankers sail with BC marine pilots aboard and tug escorts out through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and according to Trans Mountain, the terminal has loaded tankers since 1956 without a single spill from tanker operations.
Strathcona Resources is ready to ship up to 250,000 barrels a day through Prince Rupert. An exemption to the Liberal government’s tanker moratorium would open that route without scrapping the protections in the Act. That would put Canadian workers and Canadian resources first.

A busy week in Ottawa, and plenty of good conversations to bring home.
I sat down with the Canadian Real Estate Association, the Chicken Farmers Association and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, who walked me through their work here on Vancouver Island.
From housing to the farms that feed us, every one of these meetings comes back to the same thing: making life work for families at home.

The Liberals wrap themselves in the flag at election time, then pay Americans at contract time.
Veterans built the Commissionaires. They lost a federal contract that was open only to Canadian companies, and an American firm won it.
Canadian should mean Canadian. In Question Period, I asked the Prime Minister to make it right.

Not every day you get to shake hands with someone who has flown around the Moon.
Great to meet Jeremy Hansen, who became the first Canadian to travel beyond low Earth orbit on Artemis II this April. I also had a good conversation with the CEO of Telesat about Canada’s place in the space sector.
For every young person on Vancouver Island looking up at the night sky, this is proof of how far a Canadian can go.

Over the last 11 years, owning a home has slipped out of reach for too many people here, and rent eats up more of every paycheque. Young families, seniors and workers are all feeling it.
I want to hear from you. Have you been priced out of buying, hit with a rent increase, or had to move away from family to find something you can afford? Your story helps me make the case in Ottawa for real change on housing.

The Cowichan River should not have to wait for proof of harm.
It has been reported that contamination from the illegal dump site may now be reaching the river itself. Cowichan Tribes says it has been asking for action since 2010.
The site sits on reserve land, but outside the nation’s land code. Under law, that makes it a clear federal responsibility: not a shared file, and not a matter for another order of government.
Many share responsibility for how this site came to be. My focus is getting the dump and its contaminants cleaned up, and I’ll keep pressing the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations until that happens. The people of Cowichan–Malahat–Langford deserve nothing less.
