It is quite remarkable how easily we become bored with the very things God has promised to use for our good. We want something extraordinary, something exciting, something that will make this Sunday feel different from every other Sunday. Perhaps the problem isn't that God has given us too little. Perhaps we've just forgotten how wonderful His grace really is.

Thankfully, as Dr. Rod Rosenbladt incessantly clarified, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is for sinning Christians, too, like St. Paul: The Conflict of Two Natures Romans 7:14-25 14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Evan: By the apostle Paul’s own confession, so far as any man is guilty of [a legal heart], he makes his services his saviours, and he rejects the grace of God; he makes the death of Christ of no effect, and he perverts the Lord’s intention, both in giving the law and in giving the gospel; and he keeps himself under the curse of the law, and makes himself the son of a bondwoman, a servant, yes, and a slave; and he hinders himself in the course of well-doing. In short, he seeks an impossible thing, and so he loses all his labour. Edward Fisher (Marrow, p. 98)

The trouble with looking within ourselves for assurance is that we are bound to find something disappointing. Thankfully, our assurance rests not in our constancy, but in the constancy of our Savior. (And He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.)

The gospel is not simply how we enter the Christian life. It is the good news we spend the rest of our lives learning to live in light of.

The Christian never outgrows the gospel. We need its promises, its comforts, and its assurance every bit as much today as when we first believed.

Jesus lived, died, and rose again for sinners. This is not just good news for those who have yet to believe. It continues to be good news for those who already believe.

We have good news. And good news is meant to be announced, not advised.

One of the peculiar temptations of our age is to imagine that the church will be greatly helped if only the preacher were to become more impressive. A better personality, a more intellectually stimulating sermon, a more entertaining presentation—and surely the crowds will come. And perhaps they will. But the question is not whether people will come to hear the preacher. The question is whether, having heard him, they have been directed to Christ. After all, the aim of preaching is not that people would leave impressed with the man who preached, but that they would leave more convinced of the glory and sufficiency of the Savior he proclaimed. “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” (2 Cor 4:5) Remains a wonderful philosophy of ministry.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father, which art in heaven.” Many apparently heard, “Our congregation, let me explain to you a few things.”

With respect to Israel, Abraham is to be considered in a double capacity—both as the father of all true believers and as the father and root of the Israelite nation; and God entered into covenant with him for both these seeds. Yet, since these seeds are formally distinguished from one another, their Covenant-Interest must necessarily be diverse and fall under distinct consideration. Nehemiah Coxe, (A Discourse of the Covenants, p.30)

The Lord's Day gathering is profoundly beneficial even when the sermon is not intellectually stimulating or emotionally moving. Why? Because the efficacy of the Word depends on the Spirit's work. Hard Stop.

Listening to a sermon is not the same as participating in the assembled life of Christ's church.

One cool thing about belonging to the @GraceRefNet is receiving needed encouragement, counsel, and prayer from other seasoned pastors. I’m grateful my fellow pastors at @reformingtruth. I’m grateful for my fellow pastors at GRN.
