Paul Bettany Reveals How 9/11 Made Him Realize He Was in Love With Jennifer Connelly. Paul Bettany confirms that Jennifer was his childhood crush long before they starred together in A Beautiful Mind. Although they had met while working on the film, they had never dated. Everything changed on September 11, 2001. Paul was in Tuscany, Italy, shopping for groceries when he witnessed the second plane hit the World Trade Center on television. The shocking moment changed his perspective on life. He rushed back to the house and spent two days desperately trying to call Jennifer, a woman he barely knew at the time. That’s when he realized he was in love with her. Paul eventually called Jennifer and told her, “I’m coming over, and let’s get married.” Larry was stunned when Paul revealed that they had never even dated. But Jennifer’s response was just one word: “Okay.”
