Thanks @rSanti97 for shining a light on corruption in organ donation. THIS IS FIXABLE... and since the status quo reads like a Netflix horror movie, we have to protect vulnerable patients now. bit.ly/484izMI
Listening to Jennifer Erickson present on this right now — insanely talented communicator and policy entrepreneur. Highly recommend this episode purely as a study in selling a wonky policy idea.

INVESTIGATION INTO ORGAN HARVESTING PRACTICES TJ Hoover was declared brain dead. He almost had his organs removed... and then he woke up. His sister Donna Rhorer recounts the terrifying ordeal: "They had him shaved and prepped and draped and was, you know, going to start it. You know, gonna start harvesting."

Paperwork Reduction Act is example how govt process could turn well-intentioned legislation into net negative & became a test case to see whether reform in DC was possible at all. Good to see, after tireless effort by @pahlkadot, OMB came out with fixes this week. There is hope.

Trikafta was approved by the FDA 5 years ago today. Counting the trial, it’s been 6 and a half years for me. Here I am two months (Feb 2018) before starting the trial > the big approval day (October 2019) during my first semester of business school after being on the drug for a year and a half > and then getting ice cream earlier this week with our kids! Miracles do happen. It’s amazing the way life can play out in just a few years.

Thanks @EricBoehm87 for showing a stark example of why monopolies are a terrible idea. Huge thanks to Senators @ChuckGrassley @RonWyden for working to break up the failing national organ monopoly

Thanks to the efforts of people like Sen. @ChuckGrassley and @JenEricksonDC, things are starting to change. But those contractors have been failing miserably for years, subjecting Americans to untold amounts of avoidable suffering. More here: reason.com/podcast/2024/09/2…

Thank you @SenToddYoung for all you're doing to save lives on the organ waiting list
“Senator Todd Young...who lost a friend waiting for a heart, has done a lot of oversight into OPOs.. And in one year of that oversight... organ donation in the state of Indiana went up by 44 percent.” This highlights why vigorous oversight is critical. statecraft.pub/p/how-to-stop…

Thanks @rSanti97 for shining a light on how we can save lives by breaking up the national organ monopoly!
One quarter of all kidneys from organ donors get thrown in the trash. At Statecraft, we uncovered why a corrupt monopolist has managed organ procurement for 40 years, and how it’s getting fixed. statecraft.pub/p/how-to-stop…

> Organs are literally lost and damaged in transit every single week. The OPTN contractor is 15 times more likely to lose or damage an organ in transit than an airline is a suitcase.

In a 2021 hearing, I asked an industry lobbyist about how OPO executives skew data and abuse donations—like taking the organization’s private jet on vacation. I’ll keep working to hold these organizations accountable.
