Expensive taste. Zero patience. I don’t take orders... I give them.

My fingers found the ring Mother had given him to give to me.
I turned it once around my finger.
“I thought coming back here would feel temporary.”
My mouth twisted.
“It doesn’t.”
That was the problem.
“I wanted our little honeymoon bubble.”
I looked around the room.
My sass returned because sentimentality had been allowed enough oxygen.
“So congratulations.”
I pointed toward the necklace box.
“You officially helped me rob myself, infiltrated my family, got my mother to give you a ring, somehow earned Sergei’s reluctant tolerance,
“Father stopped asking whether you needed anything every time you entered a room.”
Another.
“Ro likes you.”
I grimaced.
“Lev likes you entirely too much.”
And then... “Sergei almost likes you.”
I looked back at Saša.
“That took work.”
“Do you understand how irritating that is?”
Then my voice softened before I could stop it.
“I also have to leave them again.”
There.
That was worse.
I looked toward the door.
“I just got Mother to stop trying to feed us every twenty minutes.”
A small smile.
“For safe keeping.”
It took alot to let the box go.
“We just stole from me.”
I frowned.
“That is humiliating.”
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“And now I have to pretend I lost this thing.”
Another frown.
“For the rest of my life.”
I looked toward the box.
I liked being looked at with him.
I liked the way we looked together.
That was another inconvenient realization.
By the time we returned to the room, the estate had gone quiet.
Early morning.
Everything still.
The kind of hour where pretending became harder.
I stood in front of the mirror for a moment before taking the necklace off.
My fingers lingered around it.
I had spent weeks pretending we were just visiting.
Pretending this was temporary.
Pretending I wasn’t enjoying waking up surrounded by family again.
The gala itself was almost enough to make me forget the reason we were there.
Saša spun me around the dance floor.
I let him.
When I was dipped back and his mouth found my neck just beneath the necklace, I laughed softly.
“You know everyone is staring…”
Not that I minded.
A pair of earrings.
A ring.
Never the necklace.
Never too quickly.
Just enough to make it seem like Zoyechka had returned home and suddenly remembered she owned expensive things.
Then the gala appeared.
Perfect.
I chose a deep velvet green dress.
Easy access points.
Sergei stared at him.
Then me.
Then back at him.
“What?”
I asked.
“You two know too much about this.”
I smiled sweetly.
“We’re talented.”
He did not look reassured.
Weeks passed.
And somewhere between breakfasts, dinners, Mother fussing over us,
Ro asking Saša questions about everything under the sun, Lev trying to irritate me for sport, and Sergei slowly deciding not to hate him...
I forgot we were supposed to leave.
Not really.
But enough.
Enough that the estate started feeling like home again.
But eventually the glare turned into something less murderous and more deeply suspicious.
Progress.
He even asked for our help with a few things.
One involved security around several jewels in a historic museum he was appraising.
Saša pointed out weak spots.
Blind angles.
I liked it.
Too much.
The next few weeks were disgustingly perfect.
I dressed Saša properly.
Obviously.
We matched sometimes.
Not intentionally at first.
Then intentionally because we looked fucking good.
Sergei even warmed up.
A little.
Barely.
He still glared.
That phrase nearly made me choke.
Then she gave Saša her first engagement ring.
For me.
That shut me up.
I wore it proudly.
Not because I needed a ring.
I didn’t.
But because it had belonged to her.
Because she had given it to him for me.
