BREAKING: In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court severely weakened the Clean Water Act in Sackett v. EPA. This is a catastrophic loss for water protections across the country and a win for big polluters, putting our communities, public health, and local ecosystems in danger.
Replying to @JCCBuffalo
@JCCBuffalo can you please update the aquatics schedule when you change it during school breaks? It was a real bummer that there was a lifeguard class using lap lanes when the schedule said they would be open. /1
Also, I live 20 minutes away. It's not convenient to show up only to discover the schedule wasn't correct. I asked the lifeguards if they could have it fixed and they say they have no control over it. /3

I'm still in shock. Impossible to overstate what a landmark victory this is for clean water.
Wouldn't have been possible without amazing advocacy by partners like @pfoaprojectny1 @NewburghCWP @seneca_lake @riverkeeper @BNWaterkeeper @NYPIRG @Earthjustice @citizensenviro!

Very exciting to see @EPA set drinking water standards for 6 PFAS. Now we need to see @HealthNYGov bring our MCLs in line and @NYSDEC must limit #PFAS in #CleanWaterAct permits in order to protect downstream drinking water sources. @seneca_lake @SierraClub

BREAKING: Today @EPA finally released the nation’s first drinking water standards for six highly dangerous PFAS chemicals. About 200 million people drink water contaminated by these “forever chemicals,” which stay in the environment and our bodies for decades.

The Biden Administration has approved Willow. For all the talk of “scaling back,” this decision greenlights 92% of proposed oil drilling and hands over one the most fragile, intact ecosystems in the world to ConocoPhillips. This is not climate leadership. earthjustice.org/press/2023/…
Hey @PlasticsBeyond @enckj did you see CNN dredging up that 2018 Denmark study about plastic v. reusable bags? Weren't there methodology problems with that study? I thought they assumed it would take 2 reusable bags for every 1 plastic bag...

We applaud @SenBooker & @SenMikeLee on introducing the EQIP Improvement Act of 2023 to allow more farmers to participate in USDA assistance & continue their climate stewardship. Reducing GHG emissions from agriculture is critical & urgent. And so is this bill.
Family farmers & ranchers are forced to pay into checkoff programs that can end up working against their interests. I'm proud to introduce the OFF Act w/ @SenMikeLee, to increase transparency & prohibit anti-competitive practices in these programs.

NY’s crypto mining moratorium is an important one, to not only ensure we aren’t keeping dying fossil fuel plants alive, but also studying the enviro impacts of the industry. We urge @NYSDEC to follow the science to make sure crypto doesn’t jeopardize our climate mandates!

Yesterday, I released a new report analyzing water infrastructure spending in NYS. The Governor and State Legislature have invested billions to protect clean water over the last 7 years.
But has this $$$ been reaching communities, and is it meeting the need? Let's dive in:
"We're running out of water." These are the first words of a blog post I wrote as Waterkeeper at @SD_Coastkeeper in July 2013, talking about the dire situation with the Colorado River. These issues aren't new. /1
sdcoastkeeper.org/blog/san-d…
And then we need to take a hard look at the amount of water used for farming in arid areas and evaluate if our "first in time, first in right" system makes sense where water is scarce. /4

EPA is moving to close a loophole that left hundreds of coal ash dumps unregulated, following an @Earthjustice lawsuit
There are half a billion tons of coal ash in unregulated dumps in 38 states, which can leak cancer causing chemicals into groundwater
