The recent setbacks to the so-called "Donroe Doctrine" leaves me with two thoughts: 1) The idea that the US can successfully micromanage Latin America has always been exaggerated & misguided 2) The region will never be an ideological & political monolith My latest @opinion bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

“This election was a lesson in political gravity. When voters’ top concerns are inflation and affordability, and you answer those concerns with tariffs, a trade war, and a war with Iran that exacerbates those worries, you lose elections.” nota @business bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Seguiremos informando

This time of year, as it gets dark around 430pm, I remember this Milton Friedman passage... The argument for a flexible exchange rate is, strange to say, very nearly identical with the argument for daylight savings time. Isn't it absurd to change the clock in summer when exactly the same result could be achieved by having each individual change his habits? All that is required is that everyone decide to come to his office an hour earlier, have lunch an hour earlier, etc. But obviously it is much simpler to change the clock that guides all than to have each individual separately change his pattern of reaction to the clock, even though all want to do so. The situation is exactly the same in the exchange market. It is far simpler to allow one price to change, namely, the price of foreign exchange, than to rely upon changes in the multitude of prices that together constitute the internal price structure. in The Case for Flexible Exchange Rates (or, In Recognition of Sticky Prices)

Venezuela's opposition leader's return has implications for Washington's strategy in Venezuela. Just yesterday, President Donald Trump aired the idea of Venezuela as a 51st state... In Balance of Power @business, and with @ACBerlin's sharp editing: bloomberg.com/news/newslette…

“Bloomberg Economics has estimated that just the first year of a war over Taiwan could cost the world economy $10.6 trillion, or roughly a tenth of global G.D.P.” Indeed we did! Full details on how we did it and what it would mean for key economies and sectors here (gift link): bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
