The BBC called its podcast “Alcohol in Scotland” but apparently failed to examine how Scotland actually compares with the rest of the world. The latest figures available in 2026 show Romania has the highest alcohol consumption among sovereign countries, at 17.1 litres of pure alcohol per adult annually. Mongolia has the highest estimated rate of alcohol use disorder at 5.5%, compared with around 2.7% across the UK. Scotland unquestionably has serious alcohol-related health problems, but its consumption is falling. Alcohol sales per adult drinker dropped from 12.7 litres in 2017 to 10.7 litres in 2025, while the proportion of non-drinkers has risen to 20%. A few Boston bars running out of beer does not measure national alcoholism. It shows that thousands of supporters arrived together for Scotland’s first World Cup in 28 years and businesses underestimated demand. The Tartan Army caused no trouble, brought joy and considerable spending to its host communities and raised more than $60,000 for charities not including over a million pounds raised by Craig Ferguson’s TA trek across America for SAMH. We injected in ten of millions of $ in profits to businesses right across New England and Florida not just on alcohol. We left cities far better places, with friendships made for life! The beer ran out, the goodwill did not and not because the results did not go our way on the pitch; we are always “a glass half full” but we are also fully prepared that we might not get out the group stages but there is no correlation between partying and our football performances. That was the real story if you’d actually done your proper research roles. Turning a peaceful, historic celebration into another tired Scottish drinking stereotype is neither balanced nor particularly rigorous journalism. For the record, and this is again lazy journalism and poor research, remember we “drank Munich dry” in 2024 where they’d to bring more beer in overnight before the 1st game?
