If you’re... Jumping, landing, decelerating, eccentrically loading, lifting, training on 1 leg, etc.. Then you don’t need to spend $120 on an ACL Prevention clinic. ACL prevention SHOULD just be apart of your program...not a separate program.

One thing I dislike about the private sector s&c is the blatant lies in marketing + full taking of credit of an athletes success. Marketing / posting on social media is not the problem. Deception in messaging is. More on this later, but a lot of coaches have zero shame. Signed, a private sector coach who also works in the HS sector.

There is no such thing as being over skilled, but there definitely is such a thing as being underdeveloped! Even a marginal improvement in global athleticism will 100% yield better skill, acquisition and display.

Coaching the average MS/HS athlete how to properly squat 10 years ago was a lot easier than it is today. I will also throw skipping, hopping, push ups etc.. into the mix. Its wild how many MS/HS kids have Coordination, mobility restrictions. We live in an era with skill development being shoved into kids faces 24/7 all while BASIC Physical literacy baselines are not being met. Then we ask ourselves why injury rates are going up.

In-Season training is VITAL for HS teams. Even if its just once a week for 30 minutes, exercises can push (slowly) the needle in the right direction. With programs that are on tight schedule splits like this, we typically pick: -1 Power exercise. Usually loaded jumps due to how simple and effective they are. -1 Main upper + 1 accessory. I usually stick with a heavy/low volume press as our main lift and then a pulling/rowing accessory. -1 Main lower + accessory. I defer to heavy/low volume TBDL or a box squat simply because its easy to do/set up and does not leave athletes sore compared to split squats, back squats, rdl, etc... Accessory wise, I love a simple goblet squat, lateral squat or SL RDL (further away from game days). It's not much, but 14-16 weeks of the above is better than 14-16 weeks off!

Strength coaches are in that mix too!! It’s not the badge of honor many think it is (speaking from experience).

This...ain't it lol.
Colorado State’s HC says his new defensive coordinator has been SLEEPING at the facility: “Kenny hasn’t been home in two weeks… We took our LB’s office and turned it into a bedroom.”

In another life, my career choice is being a sommelier. I love wine and all of the cultures, history, cuisine, art of growing/making/tasting, prestige etc.. that comes with it. While I try to keep up with s&c content/books/podcasts, my free reads (usually in the evenings) have a WIDE spectrum. Somehow, I always think the books outside my field helps me be a better coach, professional and person.

Incoming lawsuit. Big time.
If doctors tell me sleep is dangerous, then so is sports. What are we doing? Seriously.

People are quick to say… “Kids these days….” Without really getting to know kids these days. I know 1 thing for sure… Me and my friends in HS were not working at even a FRACTION of the rate and level as my athletes do. Add in the social media component, pressure of sports these days, and nature of the world, and I would say MOST kids are doing their best and working harder than ever. Just my 2 cents.

Today’s deceleration + acceleration work: Simple curved sprints + turn sprints. Added bonus to add a timing gate to drive intent.

Train what the sport neglects. The sport develops sport-specific skills. Training should develop the athletic qualities the sport leaves behind. ✅ Max velocity ✅ Extreme strength ✅ Jumping (both high and far)
In the vast majority of time spent on the s&c side of a training (plyos/speed/agility/strength work), I should not be able to tell what sport is being trained. If you know, you know.
