Bilbo and Frodo Baggins share the same birthday. In The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo turns 111 and Frodo turns 33, and that huge birthday party is where the story begins. Bilbo was 78 years older than Frodo.
Fans have been celebrating Hobbit Day since 1978, when the American Tolkien Society made September 22 part of Tolkien Week. So it became a day for second breakfast, going barefoot and spending a little time in Middle-earth.
The American Tolkien Society itself was formed in 1975 by Marcia L. Helms, Philip W. Helms, Paul S. Ritz and David Dettman. They created it as a literary society devoted to studying and appreciating Tolkien’s work and giving Tolkien fans a place to share their writing, research, art and ideas.
Second breakfast and a little time in Middle-earth sounds like a pretty good Tuesday to me.

89 years ago today, The Hobbit landed on bookshelves and introduced the world to Bilbo Baggins.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit was published in Britain on September 21, 1937, by George Allen & Unwin. The first printing was only 1,500 copies, with Tolkien himself providing the illustrations and designing the dust jacket. By December, every copy was gone.
The story itself started in a much less dramatic place. Tolkien was grading exam papers when he came across a blank page and wrote, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” He later said he didn’t even know why he wrote it.
Before the publisher took a chance on it, Stanley Unwin handed the manuscript to his 10-year-old son Rayner to read. Rayner liked it, wrote a favorable report, and was paid one shilling for the job.
The Hobbit became such a success that the publisher wanted more stories about hobbits. Tolkien started writing again, and years later that became The Lord of the Rings.
Not bad for a sentence scribbled on a blank exam paper.
