How do kids actually learn to read? We tackle this question in a new paper that studies a program that tripled (!!) reading gains in Ghanaian 1st-grade classrooms. Its impacts match a model of cumulative reading ability, which we will assess with future waves of data.

@JoeGoJoeGo has the best "PDF to plain text" pipeline I've seen in his app paper2audio.com. I imagine he wouldn't recommend this but uploading the paper to the site and getting back the text has been much better than me running a simple pdftotext at home.

Jane Goodall died today. While smarter and more informed people will talk about her work, I want to share a snippet from her Wikipedia page - the two greatest paragraphs ever on Wikipedia. The first parts are amusing and interesting, but the last sentence elevates it to high art.
One of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons shows two chimpanzees grooming. One finds a blonde human hair on the other and inquires, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?" Goodall herself was in Africa at the time. The Jane Goodall Institute thought the cartoon was in bad taste and had its lawyers draft a letter to Larson and his distribution syndicate in which they described the cartoon as an "atrocity". They were stymied by Goodall herself: when she returned and saw the cartoon, she stated that she found the cartoon amusing. Since then, all profits from sales of a shirt featuring this cartoon have gone to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall wrote a preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy. [...] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals. In 1988, when Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.

Software these days is insanely buggy, tbh it drives me insane e.g. basic normal use of trying to log into Slack hits "you've been trying to log in too often" (no I was just trying to log in per normal) or Windows' Snipping Tool destroys the luminance on screenshots if you have HDR mode enabled It's just little quality of life things that are broken, and there are engineers being paid high 6 figures to ship this kind of stuff *sigh*

Something I told 13 yo: If you want to be a good writer, you have to read a lot. Reading trains your ear. There is no shortcut.
