Water companies produce the worst set of pollution records ever. I have distinct recollection of sitting in a school gymnasium in 2022 listening to the then newly appointed chairman of the @EnvAgency Alan Lovell, arrogantly and boastfully telling everyone how he was going to fix the water industry. How's that one working out Alan? telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

He wrote "You're My Best Friend" for her the year they married. She raised six children while he toured the world with Queen. Fifty years later — they're still in the same house in Putney. Veronica Tetzlaff is the most private person in rock history. On March 26th, 1971 — John Deacon walked into a college disco in London. He had joined Queen just two months earlier. Across the room was a young woman named Veronica Tetzlaff — born in Sheffield, of Polish ancestry, studying at the Maria Assumpta Teacher Training College. They met. They started dating. Veronica was pursuing a teacher training course in Kensington. After a few years of dating — they married on January 18th, 1975. Veronica was already pregnant at the time of the wedding. Queen was rising. World tours were starting. Bohemian Rhapsody was coming. A friend who knew Veronica well said — "She didn't wear any makeup and wore fairly plain clothes. She is a lovely person, completely unpretentious. I've got the impression down the years that their children are the most important things to her." Together they had six children — Robert in 1975, Michael in 1978, Laura in 1979, Joshua in 1983, Luke in 1992, and Cameron in 1993. While John played bass on some of the greatest records in history — Veronica raised their family quietly. No interviews. No premieres. No fame. She chose to live a quiet life away from public attention to raise their children — a distinction she has maintained for over fifty years. Today — John and Veronica still live together in Putney, South West London. John wrote "You're My Best Friend" for her in 1975 — the same year they married. Fifty years later — the song still plays on radio stations worldwide. And the woman it was written for has never once spoken about it publicly. Some love stories don't need an audience. #johndeacon #queen

🚨INCREDIBLE: A 3-year-old was kidnapped from a public library. 48 minutes later, he was on a city bus crying next to his kidnapper — and no one knew. No one except the bus driver. In Milpitas, California, driver Tim Watson had heard the police alert earlier that day: Missing 3-year-old boy, city-wide search underway. Then a man boarded his bus with a small boy who wouldn't stop crying. Something felt wrong. Tim looked closer. The face. The clothes. The description. It was him. But he couldn't scream. He couldn't confront him. One wrong move and that little boy could be in even more danger. So Tim came up with a plan. He got on the intercom and told passengers: "Someone reported a missing green backpack, I'm going to take a quick look." He started walking the aisle, pretending to search for a backpack — but he was really getting a close look at the child. It was the missing boy. Tim quietly radioed dispatch, alerted police, and then did the hardest thing of all — he sat back down, stayed calm, and kept driving like nothing happened, with the alleged kidnapper sitting just feet behind him. He kept that bus rolling until police intercepted it. Officers swarmed the bus, arrested the man, and scooped that terrified little boy into safety. That child is home with his family tonight because one bus driver trusted his gut and stayed cool under pressure. He's not a cop. He's not a hero who was supposed to be there. He's Tim Watson — a bus driver who saw a child in danger and refused to look away. This man deserves to be recognized.🙏

Anyone defending Tommy Robinson needs to explain exactly what they think he should be allowed to get away with. A man who claims to be a great British patriot, lives in Spain and spends the majority of the year on holiday at the expense of his “donors” was sitting in a holiday resort in Cyprus while stirring up civil unrest in Britain. Journalists reported on it. That is their job. It was a legitimate national story. And because Robinson didn’t like the scrutiny, he sent private investigators after the journalists, had them tracked and photographed, exposed their home addresses and their families, and threatened to turn up at their homes, saying “I’m coming to get you”. One journalist needed personal security. Another had to remove his family from their home. If you believe that is acceptable behaviour, that a man can threaten journalists and expose their families to intimidation simply because he dislikes their reporting, then you aren’t defending free speech. You’re defending intimidation. A jury heard the evidence and convicted him. Stop pretending this was a conspiracy because you don’t like the verdict.

Andy Burnham has said that billpayers must not be treated like blank cheques for water companies. Yet if he allows this eye-watering £2.4 billion Thames Water bailout to go ahead, he would be doing just that. Yesterday, we handed in a petition signed by over 27,000 people calling on Burnham to Block the Bailout. Failing water companies don't deserve any more of our money. Let them go bust!

In 1987, Patrick Stewart refused to unpack his suitcase for six straight weeks. My throat still tightens every time I read why. Every Hollywood insider told the 47-year-old British stage actor that Star Trek: The Next Generation would be a disaster. Even his closest friend, Ian McKellen, begged him not to throw away his Shakespearean career on a television gamble. Stewart kept his bags packed by the door, waiting to be fired and sent home to London. That "six-week failure" lasted 36 years. Watching him late at night here in Japan, we saw something Hollywood never expected. In Japan, we call this quiet, unbreakable spirit "Fudoshin," an immovable heart under fire. Most action heroes scream and fire weapons to look strong. Captain Picard never needed to raise his voice. Born into deep poverty in Yorkshire, terrified of a violent home, he left school at age 15 and lost all his hair by 19, convinced his life as an actor was over before it began. Yet one English teacher, Cecil Dormand, handed that frightened 12-year-old boy a copy of Shakespeare, said "Read it out loud," and secretly paid for his first drama course. Never forget what happened decades later. On the morning Queen Elizabeth II knighted him as Sir Patrick Stewart, he invited that same retired schoolteacher to sit beside him at his knighthood luncheon. No suitcase left unpacked. No rage on the bridge. Just a cup of Earl Grey tea, a tug of his uniform, and three quiet words that commanded the galaxy: "Make it so." He passed away at 86 surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, and laughter. And this December, in Avengers: Doomsday, Professor X will grace the screen one final time. A boy who thought he wouldn't last six weeks in Hollywood gave the world an eternity of nobility. From Japan, with tears and our deepest salute: Thank you, Captain. Engage. ✨🖖🇯🇵

Almost 90% of England's water companies are still acting illegally, still dumping huge amounts of sewage into our environment. “People are sick of excuses,” screams Dame Angela Eagle. We've heard it all before and yet nothing, nothing changes. One interesting note "The UK is one of only two countries in the world where the provision of water is fully privatised. The other is Chile, where water privatisation was imposed in the 1980s by a military dictatorship." Hmm? 🤔 theguardian.com/business/202…

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

"Environment Secretary commits to take further action against water bosses over pollution." There have been 10 secretaries of state for the environment in the last 10 years alone, yep one a year. Each and every one of them have made the same cry, demanded the same action, made the same promises and each and every one of them has delivered the same result, nothing. There is only one answer, the one they all want to avoid. It's time for change, time to take these thieving, lying, corrupt companies back into public ownership.

🚨🇬🇧 The dumb-right keep saying Tommy was "just doin' to them, wot they done to him". But let me explain it to you stupids. It's not Tommy's job to hand out punishment for supposed wrongdoing, to teach people lessons, or settle scores. Tommy is not a gangland enforcer. He isn't Judge Dredd. He's not even the police. He's a civilian. Saying, "I'm not fretnin' ya or nuffin'", isn't a legal shield against being prosecuted when you launch a campaign of intimidation against someone. This is Tommy's M.O. Just ask @gingerrtom to play you the audio of Tommy threatening him like a rabid dog. Unfortunately for Tommy, he's a violent hothead with no impulse control who still thinks he's a top boy in a football firm. He was found guilty by a jury of his peers because normal people see his behaviour as thuggish, inappropriate, and illegal. It's that simple.

Thames Water’s creditors have a deadline today. They need to decide whether to hand over a £2.4 billion loan to keep the utility afloat for another 12 months. Today we're presenting a petition with 30,000 signatures calling on Andy Burnham and Ofwat to block the bailout. Their credit rating was downgraded on Monday. They're a liability.
