and the fastest way to turn on neuroplasticity is replacing “this is hard” with “what’s the first step?” you literally shift brain activity from your amygdala (fear) to your prefrontal cortex (problem-solving)

If anything, Disco Elysium makes fun of communists the most. If you opt into it, it tells you to get the gulags and death squads ready. The communist quest is centered around two geeks who talk about revolution and slaughtering capitalists but don't go outside. The union boss is a fat, corrupt mobster who has no qualms about flooding his own streets with drugs. And at the end of the game, you meet the Deserter, who is a bitter old soviet who couldn't get over the city's failed attempt at communism. His old regime was decidedly defeated in battle, but not before attempting to put nuclear power into "the people's" hands, causing a mini-Chernobyl.

Weir is exactly the kind of tech-obsessed, vaguely libertarian nerd who used to be an SF mainstay but science fiction publishing at some point decided they wanted to move beyond. But it turns out there's still an enormous audience for his brand of problem-solving techno optimism.
Andy Weir is one of the most successful novelists of our generation. Both The Martian and Project Hail Mary have gone on to be successful Hollywood films at a time where new stories aren’t getting a lot of play in cinema. PHM is already one of the most successful films of all time.
So it fascinates me to see a bunch of amateur writers or those with a fraction of his success taking pot shots at his prose. He’s a master storyteller. You don’t reach that level of breakout success if you’re not. Stop criticizing the people who have already proven their skill and work on your own!

Zefram Cochrane's characterization is writers Moore and Braga slyly poking fun at the mythology that grew around Gene Roddenberry. The visionary who in the future is celebrated for his high-mindedness actually did it in the moment to make money and get laid.

Otacon's whole "I built a giant robot superweapon for the US military because giant robots in anime are really cool and they told me it would be a strictly defensive tool I never expected them to make it launch nuclear weapons" bit in MGS seems silly until you see this shit

I noticed that Babylon 5 is having a moment, especially with it now on YouTube.
Do yourself a favor and read the Lurker’s Guide as you finish each episode. It is a fun read as the show unfolded and was a must for any fan waiting a week until the next one:

Plus, it will bring you back to a simpler version of the web.

Annoys me so much how Mando season 1 showed how much of an appetite there was for Hercules/Xena formatted genre shows with a little money behind them, and Disney was like “Let’s never do that again.”

Been rereading Ults (sue me) and to this day Tony needing to be assembled into the suit by a whole pit crew (time delays, technical errors and miscommunication included) is so neat to me. Also love the shock absorbing green goo. It’s all so visceral and grungy. What a vibe.

One of the strangest films ever made. Not really a comedy, not really action, not really a musical, just a weird weird movie, but stunning to look at!

Sneakers (1992) got buried by a goofy title and clumsy marketing, but underneath it is a ridiculously well cast, sharply written caper with real wit and gorgeous early 90s craft. People are only now catching on to how good it always was.

I optioned a screenplay a few years ago. I waived my right to a revision so Paul Schrader could rewrite it. I'll step aside for Paul Schrader, no problem.
But Paul didn't stay on, and the company hired several other writers to rewrite it. They had to buy the script before the option expired.
But no one liked the rewrites! Four years of development. The project was looking dead.
And then one of the producers said, "Can we go back to the draft we all fell in love with?"
The whole team did a weekend read, came back on Monday, and decided to return to the original draft.
They set a general target date for production and wanted to make offers to actors.
Just not before the new director did one quick rewrite of the screenplay...
