A CREC church in America rehabbed Steve Timmis. I don't know why I'm surprised.
We partner with a young church plant in Sheffield, UK. Here's a short version of how that came about and how we proceeded... A Note on Steve Timmis and Eastside Community Church: In August of 2022, we were approached by Steve Timmis and Matthew Spriggs about a new church starting in Sheffield, UK, asking for our help in assessing Steve's dismissal from Acts 29 and his subsequent departure from The Crowded House Church network in 2020. Several of our elders spent the next 18 months reviewing over 400 pages of documentation, conducting personal interviews, reviewing recorded testimonials, and spending extensive time with Steve, Matthew, and members of this new work in Sheffield (Eastside Community Church). Subsequently, our elders came to several conclusions regarding Steve's leadership as well as his fitness for ministry. We do not believe that he was treated fairly in his dismissal from Acts 29, nor did the facts surrounding his departure from the Crowded House warrant any disqualification from ministry. While Steve has had ample opportunities to grow both as a minister and in self-awareness as a leader, we do not believe his past warrants cancellation or disqualification, nor do his past actions reveal a pattern of abuse - spiritual or otherwise. Both he and Matthew have been forthcoming and transparent in reviewing Steve's work as CEO of Acts 29 and a pastor of The Crowded House. They have proven themselves to be godly and humble men, committed to the work of the gospel in their own lives as well as in the life of their church. Steve has been receptive to feedback and reflective of weaknesses in his own leadership as well as systemic shortcomings within the larger culture of both A29 and TCH. We believe Steve is not only qualified for ministry but also a particularly gifted minister and leader. The Church in the West is weakened when the due process of biblical justice is not followed in her deliberations concerning accusations raised against her ministers. Opportunities for growth and sanctification in her ministers and the churches they lead are missed, problems are conveniently simplified, and scapegoats are found. These standards of justice were not followed in the case of Steve Timmis, and the cost for his family, his friends, and the churches involved has been tragic. Steve Timmis has proven himself an effective preacher of the gospel and mobilizer of the church for her mission in the world. We pray Eastside might flourish under Steve Timmis' and Matthew Spriggs' leadership as the Gospel and Christ's Lordship are faithfully proclaimed in Sheffield and throughout the UK. It is a privilege to partner with this church in its ministry and worship, and we look forward to years of fruitful ministry, learning together, and seeking the Lord's blessing in our cities and nations.

We love and worship the system or our church more than we love and worship Jesus Christ. That is why we engage in complicity, cover-ups, silencing, name-calling, and threats. Or we offer up half-truths to see what is acceptable and what will stop the exposure.

Further very disturbing and distressing news from conservative evangelical sphere of churches in the UK. Steve Timmis co-led the Crowded House church (an @theFIEC church for part of that time) and went on to lead the Acts29 international church planting organisation.
Former church leader Stephen Timmis, 68, and his wife Janet, 61, have each been charged with eight counts of rape involving the same woman. The offences are alleged to have taken place between May and September 2008, when Stephen was a senior leader at The Crowded House Church on Sharrow Vale Road, Sheffield. Timmis co-founded the church in 2000 alongside fellow Christian leader Tim Chester and remained its senior elder until February 7, 2020. He also held senior positions within Acts 29, serving as European Director before becoming international chief executive. Timmis's leadership came under scrutiny following complaints from former colleagues and church members. In 2015, five former Acts 29 employees submitted a 19-page letter accusing him of bullying, lacking humility, excessive control and creating a culture of fear. They were subsequently dismissed after a meeting to discuss their complaints and reportedly asked to sign non-disclosure agreements as part of their severance arrangements. Former Crowded House elder Andy Stovell, who worked alongside Timmis for 14 years, also raised concerns. In a letter to church elders when he left in 2016, Stovell wrote: "People have been bruised by Steve's style. People have become cowed due to it." In February 2020, Christianity Today published an investigation featuring accounts from 15 people who described bullying, intimidation, overbearing demands and expectations of unconditional loyalty. Stovell also told the publication: "People were and are afraid of Steve Timmis." Following the accusations, Acts 29 removed Timmis as chief executive and he resigned as an elder at The Crowded House on February 7, 2020. The church subsequently commissioned an independent investigation into its leadership culture. Published on October 29, 2020, the review involved 83 participants, including former and current members, leaders, trustees and interns. Timmis declined to participate, so investigators relied on interviews, accounts and documentary evidence. The review exposed serious governance and safeguarding failures, finding that trustees had been sidelined and documenting accounts of psychological harm, intimidation and controlling behaviour, including pressure over personal decisions and isolation of former members. It also revealed that elders had discussed complaints about Timmis bullying and humiliating church members on February 6, 2020, the day before the Christianity Today investigation was published. Following publication, church elders issued a full and unreserved apology, acknowledging failures in accountability, governance and pastoral care. They accepted the findings, pledged to implement the recommendations and commissioned an independent helpline for those affected. On October 29, 2026, South Yorkshire Police announced that Stephen and Janet Timmis had each been charged with eight counts of rape following an investigation into alleged offences dating back to 2008. Officers said former members of The Crowded House may hold information relevant to their enquiries and are appealing for anyone with concerns or information to come forward by contacting South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting investigation reference 14/229723/24. Stephen and Janet Timmis, both of Psalter Lane, Sheffield, have been released on bail and are due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates Court on December 1, 2026. #UKNews #CrimeNews #Sheffield

Powerful priests. Powerful politicians. Reputations protected while children suffered abuse. When religious authority & political power shield individuals from scrutiny, accountability is evaded and survivors are silenced. NI government must move forward with statutory inquiry.

You can tell what is most important to someone by what they protect most vigorously. Looking at Christendom today, I frequently see that when the church is threatened, its energy goes into protecting the system.

Is Gillen being failed? Beattie reminds us - justice can’t be measured by conviction & sentence alone. A grueling legal battle by Donaldson’s victims has consequences for how child sex abuse cases are handled, how victims are treated & how Gillen recommendations are implemented.

More evidence of Church cover-up of child sexual abuse in NI. Justice Minister must urgently review the operational enforcement of NI’s mandatory reporting legislation. Section 5, Criminal Law Act NI (1967). @stewartcdickson belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/…

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is replicating the modus operandi of insistence on handling abuse allegations "quietly". Hiding behind the PSNI criminal investigation is the latest scheme to stave off transparency and accountability while protecting wolves in sheep's clothing!
Church after church learned that worship leader Kevin Binette had confessed to molesting children. And church after church handled it quietly. This is what happens when churches treat alleged crimes as internal matters instead of reporting them to police. roysreport.com/atlanta-worsh…
