You can’t leave a pension in your will. You need to tell the pension provider or trustees who you want the money to go to if you die, it’s done via a nomination form or expression of wishes form. Make sure yours is done and up to date. Clip courtesy of @thismorning

Two years on from the stress of A-Levels 2024 pleased to report son doing well. He’s moving into year 3 general engineering at Sheffield, and just accepted into Masters to specialise in electrical engineering. It worked out in the end!
Son achieved AAA in Physics, Further Maths and Maths and no offer from First Choice or Insurance University. Now doing mad scramble for Clearing places. Stress levels are high.

It gets sillier. The VAT cut is only scheduled to last (and costed) for six months, though it will be hard to put back once taken away. But the much quoted (and exaggerated) £45 saving is over a year! In fact as promised and paid for it will in fact only last for six months
Put another way, scrapping 5% VAT on domestic electricity bills cutting prices by 4.76% will knock about £10 a year off the standing charge and about 1.25p off each unit of electricity used. Boiling a kettle 3x a day for a year may save users maybe £3.64 a year (probably less)

Private sector defined contribution (DC) and defined benefit (DB) pension schemes can play an important role in supporting long-term prosperity for everyone says the UK Pension Regulator in its new Corporate Stratey. What is less clear, however, is the trade-off involved 1/

Directing more DC assets towards UK "productive finance" may come at a cost to retirement savers in terms of risk, returns or retirement outcomes. That raises an important question of fairness, especially if the heavy-lifting falls to low-income, debt-laden younger savers 2/

If the wider economy benefits from higher investment, is it reasonable for individual pension savers to shoulder a disproportionate share of the risk? Any strategy to harness pension assets for growth should make those trade-offs explicit. 3/3

With a hosepipe ban coming into force in our area on July 17 because the water supply is already under pressure, MPs need to explain how thousands of additional homes can be justified without first ensuring there is sufficient water infrastructure to support them.

After more than 27 wonderful years at the Financial Times, I’ll be leaving at the end of the month and heading off on some new global adventures. It’s been an extraordinary journey — from covering financial crises, pandemics, wars and, of course, multiple #pension reforms ! 1/

Not letting job candidates know they weren’t successful is poor practice and genuinely demoralising, especially for young jobseekers. Even with high application volumes, a basic outcome update should be a minimum standard. ft.com/content/2af109d0-56b7…
