JASIRA — REST IN POWER We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jasira of the Rongai Breakaway pride. Jasira was the daughter of Netira, the Rongai pride’s lead hunter, and King Olobor of the Black Rock Boys. Tragically, Netira also lost her life to injuries sustained while hunting buffalo. Losing both mother and daughter in such circumstances makes this goodbye especially painful. Jasira was euthanized today following a veterinary examination that revealed a complete fracture of her lumbar spine—the bones of her lower back. According to the field report, her injuries were caused by a buffalo encounter. A wound on her leg suggested she had likely been tossed into the air, with the findings strongly suggesting she was injured while hunting. The initial intention was to assess her condition and provide treatment. Sadly, her injuries proved far more severe than expected. The attending veterinarian made the difficult decision to euthanize her to spare her further suffering. We extend our sincere gratitude to the veterinary team and everyone who responded to help her. Wonderful news: Murera has given birth to a baby girl this morning! Her daughter entered the world bathed in the light of a near-full moon, perfect in every way. We’ve named her Mwezi, which means moon in Swahili. Murera chose to give birth in her stockade, the place that has been her nighttime sanctuary all these years. Her delivery couldn’t have been more seamless – in fact, by the time the Keepers heard the rumbles and rushed to her side, it was all over! Mother and baby are doing very well, while Mwana is already proving to be an excellent and attentive big sister. More to come, but we're filled with joy and wanted to share Mwezi’s first moments with you. (Word is already out amongst the elephants – this morning, every wild-living Umani orphan showed up to meet the newest member of their family!) A giant of the Mara has fallen. Fred, an iconic Mara Tusker, was found dead today of natural causes. Well into his fifth decade, Fred served as a symbol of the success @KWSKenya and Mara Elephant Project achieved in combatting ivory poaching over the last 15 years. Fred’s counterparts didn’t live to see old age. How lucky we are that he did. Collared since 2013, his tracking informed an approach that other Tuskers across Kenya benefited from. Even in death, Fred is the emblem for the Maasai Mara’s magic; thriving despite the challenges and contributing to a brighter future. He will be missed, but what a life well lived. We will be remembering Fred in the coming days. Stay tuned for more opportunities to join us in celebrating the life of this gentle giant.
