We're at today's DC Council meeting, where lawmakers will discuss revenue-raising proposals. This hearing is a culmination of years of advocacy urging lawmakers to think long-term about how to raise revenue equitably.
Contrary to claims that DC’s tax and spending is “out of control,” the revenue DC has collected for the Local Fund Budget as a share of the economy has been steady over time. Not accounting for inflation produces an exaggerated picture of budget growth.

DC’s inadequate revenue growth is due to major changes to the economy, including major strain from federal policies. The Trump admin’s mass layoffs have caused a man-made recession for DC & remote work has driven a steep decline in commercial property values & tax collections
If lawmakers fail to raise revenue now, thousands of residents will lose access to critical services and programs, exacerbating poverty and racial disparities. dcfpi.org/all/dc-lawmakers-m…

After-tax income inequality reached its widest point in at least 17 years. The 2025 reconciliation law didn't help, leaving 9 million children out of the full Child Tax Credit while expanding tax cuts that favor wealthier households. @smhingtgen explains: cbpp.org/blog/analyzing-the-…

Thank you for showing up strongly to oppose HR 9720, which would be a major incursion on DC’s right to self-govern.
This bill is the third attack on DC’s ability to budget in less than two years, and it is another attempt to destabilize DC.

This bill is so smart and exciting. DC with a land value tax could make our city so much more vibrant and equitable!
Replying to @maustermuhle
A second proposed change would be more notable for homeowners: It would allow D.C. to consider moving to a land-value tax (where property taxes are based only on value of land, not land and building) or a split-rate system (where land and buildings are taxed at different rates.
Corporations and billionaires are choosing profits over democracy. This push from Doordash is just the latest overstep.

Today is the 2nd budget vote. We're here to raise our voices and remind council that DC deserves an economy & a safety net that supports us in uncertain times. We know that wealth exists in DC, & if we raised revenue we could cover the programs that our city deserves.
This system is deeply unfair and people know it. Nearly half of all the wealth in the District is held by just 0.4 percent of households. itep.org/tax-the-rich-fund-o…

As wealth inequality grows, local governments across the nation should step up to make the wealthy pay their fairer share in taxes.
Local officials have a range of progressive tax policies that can help fund better public services for their communities.

Hi from the Wilson building 👋🏼
Today we gathered with friends and partners to remind the DC council that housing is a human right, and they need to fund it! We need to invest in our communities, and make sure that the #FY27 budget allocates the funds we need for housing services
