If you want to make money from your music, you're running a business.
Businesses market their products.
Before streaming, the product was a physical copy of your music. Now the product is you.
Market you.

Artists need to understand the new environment. Pre-streaming, labels picked a single and committed budget up front. If it flopped, the artist was in recoupment hell. Now many labels release first with limited spend, watch early data, and THEN invest in what is working.
Jermaine Dupri says that artists blaming "terrible marketing" is pointless when they don't have any hits to draw people to their shows
“Why y'all keep skipping around the real issue? Going on tour with no real hits, doing a show with subpar music, doesn't make people wanna come, this is the MUSIC BIZ, not the marketing business, the music is the driver, most of these artist are in Waymo's.”
